EVAdoption - Note from the editor

One new article since last week, all articles from July, chart of the week, and 6 news articles of interest.

US EV Sales Down 11% for July, Up 14% YTD

US electric vehicle sales continue to be driven primarily by the Tesla Model 3. Sales for July actually declined 10.8% in 2019 versus July 2018. Sales estimates from the InsideEVs Sales Scorecard for July were 26,395 in 2019, a decline of 3,203 units from 29,598 in 2018. In this article I share 7 new charts covering various aspects of the YTD numbers (including top 8 selling EVs, Tesla dominance, new EVs, Bolt vs Kona vs Niro, and by sales volume levels - see below).

Chart of the Week - Has California Reached Peak Gas Vehicle Sales?

It is widely known that California leads the US for electric vehicle sales, but how are these growing sales of EVs affecting sales of gas-powered vehicles? While BEV sales and PHEV sales grew nearly 81% and 40% respectively in 2018 over 2017, sales of gas-powered vehicles declined nearly 5%. With an overall decline in light vehicle sales in California of 2.24%, some of this decline in gas-powered vehicles was clearly just due to the market decline.

But interestingly, flexible fuel (-14%) and regular hybrid (-11.8%) vehicles had the largest decline. The obvious implication is that owners of fuel-efficient vehicles are the low-hanging fruit market for electric vehicles. Automakers looking to grow their sales of EVs would do well to aggressively target existing owners and potential buyers of hybrid vehicles.
