Weekly Update from Your Alderman
View this email in your browser
August 9, 2019

Dear Neighbor,

Congratulations to the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce on a successful EdgeFest last weekend. The weather was beautiful, the music was great, and there were a lot of pets! The first ever Edgewater Pet Mayor -- Pax the Goat -- was announced at EdgeFest, as well. The Pet Mayor promotion served as a fundraiser for the Care for Real Pet Pantry, raising an amazing $19,000. Congratulations to the Chamber, Bark Bark Club, and Care for Real on a successful effort and what is sure to be a new tradition in our community.

Though EdgeFest is now behind us, the summer festivities continue this weekend on North Clark St. Tomorrow Raven Theatre is hosting a Food Truck Festival from 5-8pm in their parking lot at 6157 N. Clark. Come out for food, beverages, entertainment, and more. My team will be there with 40th Ward Ald. Andre Vasquez's office to talk with neighbors to get ideas for business attraction and infrastructure improvements in this area. Please come out to support this event, click here for all the details. On Sunday, Helix Cafe, 6237 N. Clark, is hosting an Artist Pop-Up sidewalk sale outside of their cafe from 10am to 6pm. This event will feature seven vendors selling locally designed and crafted goods. For more information, click here.

A high school student who lives in our community is planning a special "Pack the Trunk" event to benefit teens at Care for Real. Because Illinois food assistance programs do not provide funding for hygiene products, toiletries, or high school-specific school supplies, Abbey Cavitt is collecting these items to donate to teens who are Care for Real clients. On Wednesday, August 14, from 3-7pm, bring supply donations to the corner of Berwyn and Clark. Thank you to Abbey for seeing a need and taking action to help others. For more details and a complete list of items being collected, click here.

The Safe Summer Nights fun continues next week:

Enjoy your weekend, shop local, and be safe and responsible when enjoying the lakefront.

Sincerely,

Harry Osterman
Alderman, 48th Ward

City of Chicago seeks input on HUD Federal Funding

The City of Chicago is in the process of developing a new Consolidated Plan that will cover the 2020-2024 period for the use of Federal grant dollars, including funds from the following programs:

  • Community Development Block Grant (CDBG),
  • Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG),
  • HOME Investment Partnership grant program (HOME), and
  • Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA)

One of the components of the Consolidated planning process is to identify the City of Chicago’s needs and priorities for HUD programming. This survey offers residents an opportunity to express their opinion regarding the most critical community needs and assist in the prioritization of funding over the next five years. If you would like to provide additional input outside of the survey, please email any comments to OBMGMU@Cityofchicago.org. Please note these may be included as public comment in the Consolidated Plan.

The survey (available until September 30, 2019) can be taken in English, Spanish, Polish, and Chinese at the following links:
