A Solemn Commemoration
400 Years in the Making
The ASERL Special Collections Interest Group is currently working to curate a collaborative online exhibit recognizing the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first Africans sold into bondage in the English Colonies. This date, in 1619, is regarded as the beginning of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade in North America.
The exhibit will document the history of enslaved people in the Southeast and will include material related to any aspect of enslavement. The exhibit will also explore the legacy of slavery by including documents and images related to convict lease labor and Jim Crow. So far, we have received exhibit items from 27 ASERL member institutions. If you would still like to submit material, please e-mail Suzan Alteri, Jessica Perkins Smith, or Tanya Zanish-Belcher.
