An Urgent Word...

America is fast becoming the most violent nation in the world. We have more gun homicides in the US than all of the other industrialized countries combined.

These days I find myself thinking twice before I go to the mall and now even a quick trip to Walmart puts you at risk. It’s Sunday morning as I write this. Am I safe to go to church this morning?

My grandkids go back to school in just a few days. Saying goodbye as you drop them off has taken on a whole new meaning.

You look at them a little longer and hold them a little tighter, uncertain as to what the day will bring.

I understand the immense pain the families and friends of those tragically shot down in El Paso and Dayton must feel.

I had a son who was murdered! Not with a gun but with a knife. My son Doug was stabbed ten times. Three in the chest and seven in the back.

The death of a loved one is always difficult but when an act of violence cuts a life short, the pain is unbearable.

I know the protection of the Lord and I’m extremely grateful for it, but do we just sit by and smugly declare Gods protection over our families while we watch people’s lives ripped apart by hate, fear, racism and violence?

When will it stop? When is enough enough? When do we stop blaming anybody and everybody? When do we stop blaming the Democrats or Republicans, the Muslims, the LGBTQ community, blacks, whites, immigrates, the left or right?

We’re all waiting for someone to make a difference, to be the answer. We’re waiting for the next wave of spiritual renewal, for the voice that will call the nation back to God.

Is it possible that we are the ones we’ve been waiting for? The change we’ve been looking for must happen in us first.

II Chronicles 7:14 was a call and promise to the nation of Israel. Could God be saying the same thing to us?

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

How much longer will we wait? How many more lives will be lost? How many more political solutions will fail and church programs prove irrelevant?

In todays world, prayer sounds so yesterday! It’s what grandma use to do. Maybe we need a new word for today.

It is time to call the followers of Jesus to fearlessly step up and remember what we’re all about.

The Church is the strongest force on this planet when it loves like Jesus loved, does what Jesus did, when it gives itself away in acts of selfless service and when it humbles itself and prays for divine intervention!
