AUGUST ANTICIPATION!

Yes, August is the time of year that I reluctantly begin saying goodbye to summer, and yet anticipate the coming of Fall, cooler weather, a more normal routine and of course our WTWS startup in September.  Great programs are lined up for our monthly meetings, preparations have been made for our October workshop with Iain Stewart, and our shows are scheduled.  As you know it takes many to make sure everything runs smoothly.  I want to thank our board members and all those that are so willing to help make WTWS such a vibrant organization.

Are you guilty of being a perfectionist?  Thinking I have to get a painting "Just right" gets me into trouble because I can't decide when to "STOP"!  I keep trying to tweak my painting which often results in overworking my piece.  Many of us need a T-shirt that says, "The Perfect Painting - Been There, Ruined That".  I admire the artists that have developed the ability to put down their brush and just stop!  Often we tweak one area, then another, and another until we realize that we've lost the painting.  I don't exactly know the answer to this phenomenon but I do know it plagues many of us.  Perfectionism really isn't the answer to a painting.  Searching for the "Essence" of a painting rather than the "Perfect" painting results in more interest and intrigue.  I encourage you to enjoy the process rather than agonizing over "Perfectionism"!

"Perfectionism is often the killer of creativity!"

Guest Artist: Carol Peterson

Presentation:  Art and Computers

Carol Peterson BIO:

Carol was born and raised in Manistee, MI, attended the University of Michigan and SMU as an undergraduate, and went to SMU and Purdue for graduate school.  Her degrees are in mathematics.  She has three children and 8 grandchildren.  She worked for 20 years as a Computer Information Professor at South Plains College and retired in 2001 when she started painting seriously. She's taken many art workshops over the years - several of these from Gale Webb and Jo Beth Gilliam.   She found inspiration and encouragement from her husband, the Friday Life Drawers, the Thursday painters, and many WTWS members.  She admits with enthusiasm, "I've learned a great deal from all my artist friends!!"

Carol Peterson Presentation:

Her presentation will be combining her interest in art with her knowledge of computers.

PRESENTATION

I use my iPad when

1.     Deciding what to paint

2.    Deciding how to proceed with a painting - particularly backgrounds

3.    How to fix or correct a painting

I hope to show how I do the following -

1.     Crop a photo for painting or a finished painting for framing

2.    Use layers to change parts of a painting

3.    Use layers to decide on a background, how to add glazing to my painting, add details

4.    Change the temperature of a painting

5.    How to darken, lighten, add saturation, add filters, etc.

I hope to show both the choices already available in the iPad and the app I use for more extensive changes.
