July 24th Leadership Development Session: Careers in Protocol
WIIT is grateful to the Meridian International Center, for hosting an amazing and insightful discussion on careers in protocol. Ambassador Capricia Marshall, former Chief of Protocol and currently with the Atlantic Council, and Natalie Jones, former Deputy Chief of Protocol, now with Meridian, provided Insights and remarks to a diverse and fascinated group of WIIT members.

The discussion highlighted the truly fundamental role that protocol plays in diplomacy, not only ensuring practical etiquette but creating unique and memorable opportunities to build long-term, cooperative relationships such as through the Diplomatic Culinary Initiative. Capricia highlighted great personal developments Insights including working on your personal brand, finding a mentor who genuinely challenges you, and focusing on driving your job, even if it’s outside the box of your job description. Natalie highlighted similar themes including promoting yourself via the intangible skills that make you a great candidate for any job – namely being a problem solver, a decision maker, focusing on trust, and being the likable member on the team who gets things done. Protocol is not just a tool of diplomacy, it’s how we can succeed in any Organization to create a Network, Partnerships and stand out as the strategic partner with clients and customers.

Thank you to Ambassador Marshall, Natalie Jones, and Meridian for a fascinating evening!
July 26th Discussion on Entrepreneurship, Financial Inclusion and Community Development with Young African Leaders
WIIT welcomed a group of Young African Leader Initiative (YALI) fellows for a wide ranging, interactive discussion kindly hosted by Florie Liser, WIIT Board Member and President of The Corporate Council on Africa. YALI, a USAID sponsored initiative, is a highly competitive fellowship that creates opportunities and key networks for African entrepreneurs and leaders in a wide range of community, social, and political engagement. This discussion featured current fellows from Kenya – Juliet Odhiambo; Lesotho – Reekelitsoe Molapo; and Ghana – Yvonne Amankwah.

The discussion focused on challenges including corruption and age-ism/gender discrimination but also included key areas of opportunity such as promoting financial education in Africa and organizing community based programs to support environmental solutions AND keep children in school. The fellows, and several YALI alumni who joined the conversation, spoke eloquently on the value that YALI has brought to their careers including critical networks; opportunities to learn from others including solutions that can be applied in your environment and the importance of confidence building for yourself, and your community.

Thanks to USAID and CCA for supporting this project and ensuring an opportunity to create a strong WIIT-YALI network!
