Bellevue considering 24/7 staffing of Fire Department

Currently, the Village of Bellevue's Fire Station 1 is staffed 7 am - 5 pm Monday thru Friday and 7 am to 3 pm Saturday and Sunday.    Response time for calls during staffed hours is 5-6 minutes and 12-13 minutes during non-staffed hours.  About half of the over 800 calls annually occur during non-staffed hours.

As the village continues to grow in population and buildings, the Village Board reviews services for opportunities for efficiencies and opportunities to provide better service.  A  study completed on the staffing of the Fire Department presented alternatives available to the village to provide 24/7 fire protection coverage.  The Village Board is further exploring implementing a staffing model that provides 24/7 coverage to include in the 2020 budget for possible implementation in 2020.

Here's a link to a recent news story:  Village of Bellevue Fire Department looks to staff station 24/7

Village of Bellevue bans sale of eCigarettes to minors and use of eCigarettes by minors

The Village of Bellevue passed an ordinance July 10 prohibiting the possession and use of vapor/vaping projects by minors.  These newer, tobacco-less products, often referred to as "electronic cigarettes" or "e-cigarettes" allow the user to simulate cigarette smoking and were available for purchase by minors because such devices are not regulated by federal or state authorities.

Initial studies by the Food and Drug Administration show that use of e-cigarettes can increase nicotine addition and contain ingredients known to be harmful.  A recent Children's Hospital of Wisconsin reported 8 teenagers hospitalized in July with serious damage to lungs. These teens had reported as users of vaping products.  The American Lunch Association reports that e-cigarette use is not safe, especially in youth with developing lungs, yet flavorings target children.  For more information on the health effects of vaping, visit Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

The approved ordinance was in effect as of July 10, 2019.  Fines for non-compliance range from $10-$100.
