My Grateful Heart

Rev. Lea Alvarado

Hello lovely beings,

This month’s theme is Gratitude and there is so much to be grateful for! I’m incredibly grateful to have been guided to this amazing community three and a half years ago. I was a Practitioner at Mile Hi at the time and I had just completed my first year in ministerial school when I heard that Rev. Jyoti accepted the Senior Minister role at CSLBV. It wasn’t long after I heard the news that I felt called to leave Mile Hi and move my Practitioner License to CSLBV in order to serve Rev. Jyoti and the Center.

This was truly one of the best decisions I have ever made, as I have gotten the opportunity to grow and expand as a human being, a spiritual being, and also as a minister and a leader. I’m grateful for Rev. Jyoti’s encouragement and support of my ministry, always saying to me, “Do what you are passionate about!” She gave me full permission to explore new things, share my talents and gifts and loved and encouraged me every step of the way. I feel much gratitude in my heart for what she has done for me, as it has prepared me for the role I will step into as the Senior Minister of CSLBV at the end of September. ...

Topics include: how to best talk to kids; messaging and setting the tone; anxiety and depression; rituals that bring family together; and finding a balance for technology and social media. Bring questions, issues and concerns and we will work to deepen your understanding of the powerful influence you are for kids and help you become the parent/guardian/grandparent you want to be.  Expect to learn a lot about yourself and marvel at the journey you are on!

Thoughts on the Continued Mass Killings

A Letter from Rev. Amanda Henderson

Hello Friends-
Our hearts are broken and we are infuriated by the systemic failures that continue to lead to loss of life in our country. We grieve with the people of El Paso, Texas and of Dayton, Ohio who have experienced horrific acts of violence born out of hate, racism, and the dehumanization of others. We need real leadership in this time. We call on our leaders to take action to address hate speech and to confront the real threat of white nationalist domestic terrorism in our country and our communities
“Watch your thoughts, they become words;
watch your words, they become actions;
watch your actions, they become habits;
watch your habits, they become character;
watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

Ideas, beliefs, and words hold power. Ideas beliefs and words lead to actions, and actions shape lives. Hateful actions are born in the mind and fester in toxic spaces of isolation, fear, and disconnection. Dehumanizing ideas and words that come from the top and trickle down, have been validated and amplified by vitriol from those who are supposed to lead. Ideas and words can lead to actions that end lives and rock worlds. Ideas and words can lead to actions that leave children, mothers, and grandmothers gunned down in the places they live.

Ideas and words and actions hold power. We are called to use words to build worlds of life and thriving for all people. As people from multiple faith communities, we are in the business of ideas, beliefs, and words. We share stories of a world that was, and a world that could be. We shape the past and transform the future.

These threats we face are born out of ideas, beliefs, and words that seek to divide and sow seeds of hate and violence. Ideas, beliefs, and words that deem one person as toxic, evil, dirty, or a sin simply for who they are, what they look like, where they live, what they believe, or who they love.
In this time we must claim our place as leaders who hold the power of ideas and words. Rather than retreating in fear, or buying into the stories that divide, we must remember our stories of resilience, strength, liberation, peace, compassion, and love. We must speak these ideas - and live them fearlessly. May we take our anger and heartbreak and turn it into movements for justice.
