Silver Sunday: 6th Oct 2019: 2 MONTHS TO GO
What a year we have planned! The Great Elderly Tea Party in Accrington, Age Against The Machine in Lewisham, Silver Swans ballet in Bury, tea dances in a fire station in Swansea and church in Leeds, 'Reminiscence' at Clifton Suspension Bridge, witches in the North East, inter-generational drawing in Birmingham, a Moroccan garden party in Kensington, Contact the Elderly tea parties across Scotland and a walking tour in the Botanic Gardens in Belfast. Visit our 2019 map and be inspired by the diversity of fun & free events already planned. Thank you!
Our mission for the next month or so continues to be to encourage as many people as possible to host events around the country as possible. There is no such thing as a 'typical' Silver Sunday event* and we love original ideas. Please continue to help us spread the word and inspire people to get involved: share this email, talk about us, tag us @SilverSundayUK and help us get more events on our map.
*Though cake, tea, music and chat are always popular!
Tackling Loneliness
We are one of the 50 partners in the nationwide Loneliness Action Group, led by the British Red Cross & Co-Op and consisting of other charities, businesses and public sector leaders. We know that Silver Sunday plays a small but vital part in addressing the challenges around loneliness in our older population. AgeUK projections anticipate 2 million over 50s being lonely by 2025/26 with many associated health implications such as a 64% increased chance of dementia. Whilst many of our Silver Sunday guests are not often lonely we know our events create opportunities to keep social contacts alive and connect with services, activities and organisations nearby. At our Tea Dance for 1,000 in 2018, 84% of guests told us they'd made new friends. It's why as well as inviting you all to create events for Silver Sunday we also ask you to think about neighbours, friends, family or the more isolated members of your community who might need extra encouragement to join our events this year.
Funding
From time to time we are asked about funding pots available to event organisers and advise people to contact their local authorities. We are thrilled Mid Sussex and Chiltern & South Bucks district councils are offering Silver Sunday grants. London based events may also be eligible for the Team London Small Grants (2019/20) for projects tackling loneliness.
We hope 2019 will be the most multi-generational, accessible and inclusive ever and are proud of our new partnership with the Scouts. The Silver Sunday Scout badge will available on the Scout Shop from mid August 2019. We encourage all event hosts to invite their local Scout group to help at their event, earn their badge and create new and lasting inter-generational friendships.
Silver Sunday Event Decorations
This year, in addition to our popular bunting, we will be creating downloadable decorations to help bring your venues to life. These will be made available on the Resources section of our website in September. Tell us what decorations you would like to see from posters to selfie frames to cupcake flags via info@silversunday.org.uk or @SilverSundayUK and send us pictures of your own creations too.
Our WEBSITE is bursting with inspiration and tools for running amazing activities including our IDEAS, EVENT ARCHIVE2018 GALLERY and VIDEO STORIES pages and recent NEWS coverage too. Ring us for a chat on 020 7641 3609, tag us @SilverSundayUK, email info@silversunday.org.uk. We love hearing from you.
Warm wishes from us all,
The Silver Sunday Team
Christabel, Georgina, Lucinda, Matthew & Sonja
Silver Sunday is a special day in the national calendar when everyone can come together to celebrate older people: a day in the nation's hearts where older people feel valued and are given new opportunities to get out, keep their minds and bodies active, learn new skills, make new friends and connect with the communities and generations around them. It's a success because of the thousands of incredible people like you. Thank you for all your help in making this possible.
