Message from the Dean

In May 2019, the University of Findlay College of Pharmacy graduated its 10th class, bringing our alumni body to over 600! As Dean of the College, I am very proud of our faculty, staff, and students, and ever grateful to advisers and friends of the program for their continued support and guidance.

As we kick off the 2019-2020 academic year, I am pleased to invite you to help us show support to our students at this year’s white coat ceremony, and also to share updates from the College, including exciting research in pharmacogenomics. Have a wonderful end of your summer. Go Oilers!

HELP US GIVE A WARM WELCOME TO THE CLASS OF 2023

Do you remember your anticipation and excitement when you participated in your White Coat Ceremony and received your first coat?  Do you recall how proud you felt the first time you put it on?
In September, the College of Pharmacy will celebrate this milestone with our very own incoming PharmD Class of 2023 at their White Coat Ceremony.  The ceremony is an important tradition that serves to officially welcome these students into the profession of pharmacy.  When you support one of these students, you are affirming to them the continuity of excellence, ethics, and integrity shared by all graduates of the University of Findlay College of Pharmacy.
I invite you to support a student by providing a note of encouragement and/or by providing financial support to purchase a white coat for a student. Each gesture is a very special way of welcoming the newest members into the profession of pharmacy and it also lets our students know that their future is supported by you – a proud past recipient of a white coat.

Each note of encouragement will appear on a card in the pocket of a white coat at this year's ceremony.
By sponsoring a white coat, you are helping these students dress for success in their professional attire to be respected by those they encounter.

Dr. Bradly Shinn Memorial Fund Benefits from Golf Outing

The University of Findlay College of Pharmacy hosted the second annual Pharmacy Golf Outing on June 14, 2019. Players, faculty and sponsors worked together raising over $10,000 to support pharmacy students. This year’s fundraising will go towards the Dr. Bradley Shinn Memorial Scholarship.
Bradley Shinn, Pharm.D., was a professor of pharmacy practice at the University since 2007 and passed away in Feb. 2019. According to Debra Parker, Pharm.D., College of Pharmacy Dean, he was a talented teacher, a strong and passionate student advocate, a kind man, and truly a cornerstone of the program. “This event was a big success and a fantastic opportunity to raise support for an endowed student scholarship in Dr. Bradley Shinn’s name,” said Parker. “He was such a strong student advocate – I am confident that establishing a scholarship in his name to support student education would have meant a lot to him.”

Closing The Achievement Gap (CTAG) Camp

Closing The Achievement Gap (CTAG) was developed as a statewide program to help underserved, diverse middle school and high school students achieve success in academics, college, and career exploration. Just 35 miles south of the University of Findlay, Lima City Schools' CTAG program pairs students with community members who mentor, motivate, and help create a pathway to success.
With the support of Nutrien in Lima, the University of Findlay has partnered with Lima City Schools to offer day and residential camps for the next three years. Findlay's goal is to help these students see that a meaningful life and productive career is something that is not only possible, but something the University is committed to helping them achieve. A Standout at Brigham and Women's Hospital - straight from the University of Findlay
Congratulations to Dr. Brian Schuler (PharmD '18), who was selected in a highly competitive process to complete a post-graduate year 1 (PGY1) residency position at the Brigham and Women's Hospital ("The Brigham"), in Boston, MA. As a teaching hospital for Harvard Medical School, "The Brigham" is an 800-bed facility that serves the most critical and complicated patients in the northeast.
Completing residency training at The Brigham is an accomplishment in and of itself, but Brian was selected as its 2018-2019 PGY1 Resident of the Year!  After this recognition, and the closing of this chapter, what's next in his career? He has been selected to continue on at The Brigham in a PGY2 residency, specializing in critical care.
According to Brian, "One of the main reasons Findlay was my first choice is because of the opportunity that a small school afforded me. I wanted an experience where I was not just a number and could instead form relationships with my professors. Taking advantage of these opportunities through joining organizations, pursuing leadership roles and seeking pharmacy experience early in your career is so helpful in determining your interests. If I could say one thing to current Findlay students, it would be that Findlay gives you the foundation that you need and there is no limit to what you can pursue. All the hard work is worth it! "

Camps at UF, ONU offer hands-on learning for high school students considering a career in pharmacy

(Written by Sara Arthurs, a reporter for The Courier in Findlay, Ohio. Story originally published on July 3, 2019).

High school students mixed solutions, taste-tested flavorings for children’s medication and learned about many aspects of pharmacy work at “pharmacy camps” held at the University of Findlay and Ohio Northern University last week. Both pharmacy schools opened their doors to high school students – some of whom came from out of state – who got to attend lectures and try a variety of hands-on activities.
Staff at both universities said pharmacy camp can serve as a recruitment tool, with many students going on to attend college there. But others may find pharmacy isn’t for them, after all – and, as the University of Findlay’s “Queen of Pharmacy” Cindy Fitzpatrick said, better to know that now than after committing to and paying for six years of pharmacy school. Fitzpatrick, a retired high school principal, now teaches first-year pharmacy students “how to study.”  READ MORE

The Skills of a Leader: Alumnus Leads by UF Example

Tom Pierson Pharm. D. ’16 may very well have been a leader before he attended the University of Findlay; however, according to him, UF strengthened his leadership skills just that much more. His time at Findlay, he said, enabled him to learn alongside the best faculty and to develop leadership skills as a member of residence life as well as a leader of multiple student organizations. He explained that he uses those skills and other lessons learned specifically from his experiences as a pharmacy student at UF every day now that he is the Pharmacy Manager of Specialty Clinics and Ambulatory Services at Cleveland Clinic.  READ MORE
Student Spotlight:
Racheal Hendershot
UF's P3 student Racheal Hendershot is from the small Ohio town of Cridersville, which is in between Lima and Wapakoneta. She is committed to studying and being active as Treasurer of the UF Save the Bees Club and Vice President of our National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) chapter. Outside of classes, she works multiple jobs on campus and is involved in a pharmacogenomics research project. However, she does like to relax with friends and go out to eat as often as she can to keep a work-life balance. Racheal's hobbies include weekly Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, weight lifting, painting, and crafting. She is especially proud of her hidden talent... wreath-making skill!  According to Rachel, "I chose to attend Findlay because of the warm and welcoming campus atmosphere. Campus life is rich at UF with an abundance of fun activities and free events for mingling with other students. Additionally, the pharmacy faculty have continuously been supportive and encouraging of my academic career, while the small class size has helped me to build a strong network of friends.  My best piece of advice for an incoming freshman would be to express your interest to others early. Whether your interest is attending a national conference or simply exploring a nearby city on the weekend with friends, be open about your goals with others. More often than not, your friends and professors will be enthusiastic about helping you achieve these goals."
Faculty Feature:
Julie Oestreich, PhD, Pharm. D.
A native of Wayne, Ohio, Dr. Julie Oestreich attended Ohio Northern University to earn her Doctor of Pharmacy degree and then the University of Kentucky where she completed her PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a short postdoctoral fellowship. Her graduate training primarily focused on the pharmacology and variability of antiplatelet agents.
She began her career as a faculty member at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where she taught pharmacy students and frequently traveled to a reservation to study the effectiveness of aspirin and clopidogrel in the American Indian population. Later, she accepted a position back at her alma mater in Lexington, Kentucky to serve as Director of the Research Office for the College of Pharmacy.
In August of 2018, Julie joined our faculty at The University of Findlay to teach pharmacology, pharmacogenomics, pathophysiology, and calculations. She is excited to be back in the classroom trying out new ways “for us to learn together” and working with her team to build a pharmacogenomics research program at the college. Click HERE to hear about the research she and fellow faculty members are conducting in the field of pharmacogenomics!
Julie currently lives here in Findlay and occasionally travels to her family’s farm to “get dirty and stay grounded”. This June, she journeyed to Guatemala with a mission team to help build a house and orphanage.
According to Julie, “Findlay is the ultimate destination for collaborative learning. I can’t imagine a better group of people to work with."
