Greetings, Pacific Northwest District Key Clubbers!

I hope that you are all enjoying your August so far. It makes me sad to think that summer vacation will be coming to an end soon, because I feel like there’s so much left to accomplish with the time we have away from school. Whether it’s serving your community, planning for the fall, or even going on an exciting vacation, I hope that you are all making the most of your summer, like I have tried to do.

In terms of Key Club, I am looking forward to celebrating servant leadership at the 102nd Annual PNW Kiwanis District Convention, leading Summer Board so that our LTGs can learn how to more effectively serve their clubs, and continuing preparations for Key Club Days.

This email update is about making an impact. I hope that this email will give you, your officer board, and other members of your club ideas about how they can contribute to their homes, schools, and communities. Keep reading to get ideas for your officer meetings, learn about new changes to Key Club Days, and an introduction of our new International Trustee, Irin Shim.

As always, feel free to reach out to me at governor@pnwkeyclub.org if you have any questions!

My name is Irin Shim and I humbly serve as your International Trustee for the 2019-2020 term! I am a proud CNH Bee and lover of cats, green smoothies, and vegan ice cream! You can always catch me with an energy drink - preferably a Bang - or call/email/text at any hour of the day. I am only one message away, so if you ever need something, whether it be a friend, hypocritical advice, or have any questions, comments, or concerns, please reach out to me; I don't bite!
I am beyond ecstatic for the coming term and to serve as International Trustee for the mighty New York, Pacific Northwest, and Caribbean-Atlantic Districts. It is the honor of a lifetime. Now as the fall season comes around, be ready to take the school and fiscal year head on! This is the perfect time to recruit new members, plan a back-to-school fundraiser and service project, or just get knee deep in service! Balancing school work, service, a personal life, and everything in-between is the challenge of being a high schooler... but if anyone can handle it, it's you.

Together, we are UNSTOPPABLE.
Let's go change the world.
The beginning of the school year is less than a month away, and the half-way point of the service year is within arm’s reach. It’s important for all officers to take a step back and evaluate their performance thus far, before diving into the most chaotic -- and important -- part of the year. This is so that they can have the most desired impact on their club and community. For this email update, I’ve pulled a few of my favorite snippets from Be the President, Key Club International’s official training guide for club presidents. I encourage all club officers to take a look at this valuable resource so that they can expand their knowledge of their role as a leader, and ultimately contribute to a productive, high-functioning club.
Your club officers will spend a lot of time together this year. They may start out as best friends, or they may start out as adversaries. No matter which, your goal should be to help your officers learn to work as a team. One great way to get club members off to a great start is to plan a retreat at the beginning of the term. This can be a way for you to learn more about your team and to set goals. A great way to encourage this type of teamwork is to include team building activities. Be sure you choose activities with a purpose. Each activity should be aimed at encouraging a topic important to your success, such as communication or working together. You can find lots of activities online, but remember: the most important part is to talk about the activity, what skills you used, and how you can incorporate those skills later in the year.

At some point this year you might notice a shift. Certain members may stop coming to meetings. Board members may drop the ball. Maybe you don’t always feel as into your own role as you did at the beginning. A loss of motivation is nothing to fear! Just ask yourself these questions:

Is there a loss of purpose? Do they/you still believe in the mission? Are they/you able to connect your actions to impact?

Is there a loss of ownership? Is there freedom in how tasks/work/goals are completed? Are individual wishes and ideas valued?

Is it something outside of the organization? Is there something in your/their work, school or home life that is taking over what to focus on or maybe something you/they need to focus on instead?

BE THE PRESIDENT
Key Club Days will take place next month on September 7th in Federal Way, Washington; September 14th in Portland, Oregon; and September 28th in Spokane, Washington. On that note, Early Bird Registration will be closing shortly for these events. The final day to order tickets for Key Club Days North and South will be August 25th and September 15th for Key Club Day East. I would highly recommend purchasing tickets on the PNW Key Club Shop before the deadline, as tickets sold at the door will not be guaranteed a meal and will not be available at the early bird price.

Curious what happens at Key Club Days? Here’s what to expect this year:
  • Missed your opportunity to purchase Thirst Project merch at DCON? We will be selling a limited amount of sweatshirts, hoodies, and stickers at each Key Club Day. Additionally, Kellen Brewer will be visiting Key Club Day North again this year to talk about the Thirst Project.
  • Spirit gear is encouraged! We will be giving spirit sticks to the loudest, most spirited divisions at each Key Club Day.
  • Keynote speakers include highly-rated DCON speaker and life coach Sahil Punamia for Key Club Days North and South and American Ninja Warrior contestant Hoan Do for Key Club Day East.
  • Each LTG will be organizing a “Meet Your LTG session,” a thirty-minute period of time for your division to get together, participate in icebreakers, give updates, and more.
  • After the program ends, we invite you to enjoy the rest of the day in the theme park. By purchasing a Key Club Day ticket, you also gain access to the venue until it closes in the evening.
