A Little Goes a Long Way

      I have just completed several days staying at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital as I have undergone a few tests on my ‘ticker’. Sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you just have to sit back and wait. Sitting and waiting gives you lots of time to think and observe. I must say that, in the Vernon area, we are blessed to have a great hospital and a team of competent nurses, doctors, and support staff, each doing their job to serve our community.

      I have also had a lot of time to observe people. A simple smile or polite welcome are simple courtesies that make all the difference. Yes, there are days when we forget, and it seems to me that we are robbed of joy at work on those days. I experienced both smiles and polite welcomes on my recent visit and it was a good reminder for me. It has reminded me that it’s important never to be too busy for a simple smile, or a friendly face. They can make a huge difference to a person, especially when people are under stress as they often are while in the hospital. 

      I often hear feedback from our customers about our friendly staff and I am so proud of them. It takes effort and even more so when you are busy. We will continue to work hard to be a welcoming place for everyone, regular customers, your visiting friends and relatives and those ‘first-timers’ to our farm. Thanks for the kind words, we sincerely appreciate it and please drop us a line when you think of a new product, service or suggestion you might have to improve the experience at our family farm.       We are now heading into our crazy, but delicious season, as we harvest new crops every week like sweet corn, peppers, tomatoes, and very soon, vine-ripened melons. We are also busy behind-the-scenes planning for the apple harvest and our special fall festival weekends at the farm. We look forward (God willing) to harvesting a fantastic crop of apples this year.

Peaches are in abundance now and I am happy to share with you a recipe I have loved and adapted from an old Okanagan cookbook – Okanagan Baked Chicken. We also shared this recipe in the Okanagan Art Calendar (August). It is simple and delicious! Enjoy as many peaches fresh as you can because nothing beats a ripe Okanagan peach and the season comes and goes all too quickly. Come by and try our NEW fresh Peach Salsa and don’t forget to put away a few peaches for the winter months by canning or freezing them. You can never have too many peaches!
