As a proud member of the new 2019-2020 SHPE Houston Chapter Board, I would like to extend my gratitude for your continued partnership, support, and encouragement.
I also want to thank Maria Rocca and the 2018-2019 SHPE Houston Chapter Board for their leadership and professionalism. We all can be proud of the work they did during their tenure. Gracias!
We have been working hard on the Chapter leadership succession and planning a multitude of events for this upcoming year. I have the honor of introducing our newly elected 2019-2020 SHPE Houston Chapter Board as follows:

We held our first Strategic Planning Retreat on July 13th where the board was able to get to know each other and align on our roles as leaders. We also aligned on a common message with regards to the chapter activities to find new ways to increase our scholarship goals that we will meet with your help. Some of the goals to achieve are:
- Inclusion: we are asking our members to volunteer at least a couple of hours each quarter in order to increase our outreach efforts while providing to our members the opportunity to change lives. What differentiate us from any other organization is the importance we give to reach back to our community, our roots, our familia.
- Growth: we will reach back to our non-active members to generate interest to come back to our chapter. In addition we will increase the pipeline of members from University chapters in the region with the implementation of a buddy-mentor program to help new professionals relocating to the Houston area.
- Lead: we are committed to increase our partnership with the University and SHPE Jr chapters in the region and other organizations. We will increase our partnership with key groups in the region to increase our name recognition.
As you can see, we all will have opportunities to volunteer in order to fulfill our vision of “a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers.”

SHPE at NILA
We had the opportunity to send our two vice-presidents, Mayra Sanchez and Jesus Williams, to the SHPE National Institute for Leadership Advancement (NILA), from August 1st through the 4th, where they captured any changes to National standards and guidelines as well as information on new initiatives. In the picture, Mayra and Jesus during NILA. They are now back energized, motivated and even more inspired!
