National 
63,000 international students received Chinese government scholarships in 2018

A total of 63,000 international students were funded by Chinese government scholarships in 2018, accounting for 12.8 % of the total foreign students in China and 70 % of the funded students were pursuing master or doctoral degrees.


China to boost mathematics research cooperation with foreign institutes

The Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), the Ministry of Education (MoE), the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the National Natural Science Foundation issued a joint plan on 18 July to strengthen mathematical science research. The plan calls for continued support for basic mathematical science, promotion of research on applied mathematics, and greater levels of exchange and cooperation between domestic and foreign institutes.


China strengthens regulation, supervision of online after-school training

On 15 July, the MoE and five other central authorities issued new guidelines for online after-school tutoring services. By the end of 2019, all online after-school training agencies will be registered and by the end of 2020, the government aims to establish a nation-wide monitoring system for online-after-school training.
 

MoE asks universities to adopt similar standards for foreign and Chinese students

The MoE will ask universities to adopt similar standards for all students, foreign and Chinese, in teaching, exam requirements, education resources and services, said an official from the MoE. The statement came after the alleged preferential treatment of international students at a Shandong based university.


Private schools accounted for 35% of Chinese schools

China's private K-12 schools totalled 183,500 - an increase of 5,815 from the previous year, according to the MoE. Private school accounted for 35% of the total school numbers.

Hainan welcomes foreign parties to establish educational links in the province

The MoE and Hainan provincial government issued a joint circular in July to deepen educational reform and open up to international collaborations. The plan says that top foreign universities are welcome to run joint ventures with Chinese institutions or operate independently in Hainan. Sino-foreign joint institutions in medical and health sciences will be encouraged. Hainan will also pilot the establishment of foreign engineering based universities and vocational institutions, operating with independent legal entity.
 

Beijing, Shanghai among world's top 40 student cities: QS ranking

The 2019 QS Best Student Cities Ranking was released on 31 July, Beijing ranks 32nd and Shanghai ranks 33rd. Nanjing and Wuhan ranks 99th and 105th respectively.

Several Double First Class universities announces major cooperation plans (CHN)

Several Double First Class universities have recently announced major plans, including international cooperation plans. The Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Renmin University of China signed an agreement on 25 July to establish a Sino-Foreign joint institute in Ningxia in the field of grape growing and winemaking, Industrial and commercial marketing, and economic management. The foreign institute partner was not announced; Shanghai Jiao Tong University have recently registered for a graduate institute to be established in Singapore – the SJTU Asia-pacific Graduate Institute; Tsinghua University and Shanghai Municipal Government signed an agreement on the 29 July to boost training on science and technology professionals and to establish an international innovation hub in Shanghai.

Around 300 million people in China studying English

According to Xinhua News Agency, there are over 300 million people of all ages learning English in China. Consultancy firm Frost & Sullivan said that the annual growth rate of the English language education market in China will rise to 20 % over the next five years, pushing the total market value to 365.9 billion yuan (74 billion AUD) by 2023.
