Survey on DEIMS-SDR metadata fields
 As a member of LTER-Europe, ECN has contributed metadata to the Long-Term Ecoystem Research community's online metadata catalogue, DEIMS-SDR ( Dynamic Ecological Information Management System - Site and dataset registry). An online survey has been launched to gather views on the metadata in the catalogue, with a view to improving the data structure. You are invited to take part in the survey. Your views will help the DEIMS developers to better ensure that the catalogue meets user expectations.

Help develop the CEH Data Science Framework: workshop invitation
 The UK's Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) is developing a Data Science Framework (DSF) to enable easy access to CEH environmental datasets and models, including data managed on behalf of ECN. CEH are designing the DSF to be used by the environmental research community and wants to share what you can access already and hear if what is planned meets your needs. The event (sponsored by UKRI) is free to attend. It is organised through the CEH UK-SCAPE programme, which encompasses CEH's ECN monitoring.

ECN sites - outdoor laboratories at which to study our changing environment
 The wide range of regular environmental measurements, wealth of historical data and local knowledge of site managers mean that many ECN sites, such as mountainous Snowdon, agricultural Hillsborough and wooded Alice Holt (pictured) are excellent locations for field environmental research and teaching.

Discover ECN long-term datasets
 Our longest running terrestrial ECN sites began operating in 1992, making 1993 the first complete year of data collection. ECN data including meteorology, soil solution chemistry, atmospheric nitrogen, butterflies, moths, beetles, bats, bird and vegetation can be downloaded for free from the CEH Environmental Information Platform under an Open Government Licence. If you are engaged in ecosystem research or teaching, why not see if these datasets could support your work? Use the link below to quickly access our unique physical, chemical and biological datasets containing the complete run of data available from our terrestrial sites. Data for seven of the sites span the entire 23 year period up to 2015.

We'll be at the ILTER Open Science Meeting
 The second ILTER Open Science Meeting will take place from 2-6 September 2019 in Leipzig, Germany. It will unite members of the Long-Term Ecosystem Research (LTER) community from around the globe. Representatives of ECN will be there so if you are going, be sure to say hello and hear about ECN monitoring, data access, site-based research opportunities and how ECN and CEH manage long-term environmental datasets.

In this study, researchers used aerial imagery collected by flying a UAV over the ECN Moor House site, an upland blanket bog. From this spatial data, a digital surface model was constructed and vegetation and peatland features were classified, enabling carbon loss to be estimated. The paper shows what can be achieved with low-cost UAVs equipped with consumer grade camera equipment, and demonstrates their potential for the carbon and peatland conservation research community.
