Centre for European Research

Dear Colleagues, Friends and Followers,

It is with an immense pleasure that I can convey the excellent news that CER has been awarded the prestigious Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence award for 2019-2022. This highly competitive award is a recognition of the quality and excellence of the work of CER and its brilliant team of experts. It will support promising and ambitious research, teaching and outreach activities on the future of the EU-UK relationship, which is so needed at this crucial time of the negotiations on Brexit. The NEXTEUK project is co-funded by the Erasmus + Jean Monnet Programme, please stay tuned for our upcoming activities.

In the meantime, you can find below a selection of the great work accomplished this Spring, an interview with our colleague Stijn van Kessel and an announcement for the launch of the CER prize for our postgraduate students.

We will be back with a great selection of events and a lot more in the autumn. In the meantime, I wish you a relaxing summer break.

CER News
Projects
The latest conference organised in the framework of the EUPLANT project, (involving Dr Matthieu Burnay and Dr Sarah Wolff as investigators) focused on ‘The Internationalisation of EU Law and EU-China Relations’. It aimed to uncover successes and failures in the internationalisation of European norms, standards, and procedures as well as concrete cases of legal transplants in the interactions between the European and the Chinese legal systems. The conference critically assessed the different processes in which the EU and its Member States have shaped the evolution of the Chinese legal system through natural diffusion, active values promotion, and voluntary borrowing. It aimed to enhance the mutual understanding between Europe and China on their respective legal systems in those areas of law that are significant in the context of the EU-China Strategic Partnership. The conference also addressed for that purpose the diffusion and defence of values central to the EU legal order.
