FARM NEWS

If you are looking for the Summer Market order form or information about bulk tomatoes, just scroll down to the bottom.  Since this is the first Wednesday of the month, I will start things off with a farm update for you all.

The first question I usually get at the pick up station these days is about a baby update, so even though it's not vegetable related, I will share with you all that our new family member has finally arrived!   She was born on July 22, and her name is Arla.  She and Rachel are doing well.  For a brief moment we even all sat on the couch together and nobody was crying so here's a look at our new farm family of four.
As for the vegetable world here, the operation is starting to roll along nicely again now that I am more mobile.  The big step this month was getting permission from my physiotherapist to commence riding my bike again and I wasted no time in that department.  The first load was a trailer full of onions and lumber for some new onion curing racks that I added to the high tunnel.  When onions reach maturity, they need a warm dry place to cure for several weeks in preparation for storage and the high tunnel meets these requirements perfectly.   There just isn't much space in the tunnel at the moment.  That's why I was delighted that this little rack idea popped into my head, allowing me to neatly cure our onions without occupying precious growing space.
Garlic is another crop we need to cure for long term storage and that process began this week.  Unlike our different onion varieties, our garlic is all ready for harvest at the same time.  We have a window of about a week to get the job done or we risk sacrificing the storage quality of our garlic heads.  Here's a look at this season's garlic crop moments after my shovel dug them all out of the ground.  Soon after, they were hauled to our nursery greenhouse and hung in bunches for curing.  It's a stellar crop this year so all you garlic lovers can look forward to some fine flavour and huge juicy cloves.
When I wasn't harvesting or pruning something this month, I was likely planting more crops to take us into the fall season.  That list has included beets, cabbage, lettuce, and broccolini so far with a few beds of spinach yet to come.  We haven't grown broccolini before, but we have really been enjoying a small test patch in our backyard this spring so I optimistically planted two more full beds this month.  If they work out as well as our test patch, you'll have the opportunity to order some in the fall.
BULK TOMATOES

We are offering cases of tomatoes again this year at a discounted rate for those of you who like to make your own sauces and salsas.  Case sizes are 5kg (11lbs) for $45 or 10kg (22lbs) for $80.  If we can't satisfy your order right away, we'll start a waiting list and notify you as soon as we have another case ready.  Just reply to this email to place an order.
SUMMER MARKET

Baby cucumbers, basil, and oregano are the new items on the list this week, but tomatoes are the real star of the show right now.  Just click the big blue button below to see the full list and submit your order.  Orders placed by Thursday at midnight will be ready for pick up at our farm on Saturday from 9:00am to 12:00pm at 434 Ave D South.
