Staff,

As I shared in my last update, this summer we have been working on several administrative and departmental restructuring efforts, and I want to provide an update focused specifically on the Instruction department.

As a review, here are several highlights of our overall approach to administrative restructuring.

DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The total number of district leadership positions was reduced by a .4 Full Time Equivalency (FTE) for 2019-20 as compared to 2018-19

  • The title and role changes that will result as part of restructuring efforts will not result in additional administrative/supervisory FTE

  • Over the last 2 years, the district has reduced 3.3 administrative FTE and over $175,000 in annual administrative/supervisory salaries through restructuring

For the restructured Instruction department, we focused on providing support for staff and students in literacy, science and social science, multilingual programs, and math.

INSTRUCTION TITLE AND ROLE CHANGES:

Literacy Facilitator: Due to Dr. Kim Barrett’s transition to principal at Brentwood, Alyssa Kocher will transition to the role of literacy facilitator to provide district leadership and support for literacy. Alyssa has been an instructional coach at Clearmont for the past four years and served as a reading resource teacher at John Jay before becoming an instructional coach. Alyssa will continue the curriculum and assessment work in the area of literacy and support our district literacy initiatives.

Science and Social Science Facilitator: Anne Fleming will serve as the science and social science facilitator. Anne has worked in District 59 for the past 20 years teaching science at Friendship Jr. High. In addition, she has served as the science department chair and participated in numerous curriculum committees. This is a new grant funded position, and will support curriculum design, implementation, and teacher practice in the areas of science and social science. The position will focus on supporting the successful implementation of curriculum at K-8, with an emphasis on grades 6-8 in 2019-20.

Multilingual Program Facilitator: Andrea Cohn will serve as the multilingual program facilitator. Andrea most recently served as an instructional coach at Rupley Elementary School and prior to that, she worked as a first grade dual language teacher at John Jay Elementary. This is a new grant funded position and will work under the direction of Griselda Pirtle, director of multilingual programs, to support individuals and teams who serve our language learner population, including general education classrooms and dual language classrooms. In addition, this role will focus on leading language acquisition district professional development and curriculum development teams.

Math Facilitator: Cindy Placko’s transition to assistant to the principal/instructional coach at Ridge leaves a vacancy in the math facilitator role. Michelle Benages, who has served as a junior high math teacher and an elementary instructional coach, will be moving into the role of math facilitator. The math facilitator role will continue to provide math support across the district in partnership with Mary Beth Niles, the director of mathematics.

Early next week, I will send out one final update to highlight all administrative changes, including a review of those changes we’ve shared in the Student Services and Assessment department and Instruction department, as well as building administrative changes.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I hope everyone has a great rest of your week.

Dr. Fessler
