February 2014

Message from the Chair

The Department’s focus during the latter half of 2013 has been on the expansion of clinical services.  The FIU Faculty Group Practice (FGP) Broward site has witnessed an increase in therapy services provided by Katie Santana, LCSW and psychiatric services by Luis Carcache, MD and Leonard Gralnik, MD, PhD. They will continue to provide care for children, adolescents, adults and families in Broward County.  At the Faculty Group Practice on the Modesto Madique Campus (MMC), Katie Santana, LCSW has been very busy performing evaluations and providing individual and group therapy.  Luis Carcache, MD is also providing care for adolescents and adults at this site.  Dr Carcache’s area of expertise is the evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental disorders.  Eugenio Rothe, MD will begin providing services at the FIU Health MMC site beginning this week as well.  In 2014, look for further development of our neurodevelopmental program at both sites.

The FIU Health Collaborative Program, an ambulatory program in collaboration with the Florida Health Miami-Dade County (FKA Department of Health), is now operational.  Behavioral health services will be integrated with FIU primary care services, specialty care services (eg gynecology, adolescent medicine, cardiology and others) and the Green Family Foundation NeighborhoodHELP (NHELP) program.  The program will be anchored in the Florida Health Miami-Dade County main offices in the Health District but integrated with NHELP’s family and community based services.  Clinical services will be provided by the Department’s two experienced therapists, Martha Fonseca, LCSW and Michelle Lake, LMHC, NCC.  Patricia Junquera, MD will assist in the provision of services and the development of our innovative care model.

Several FIU 4th year medical students have applied for residencies in Psychiatry.  Much of this is a testament to the outstanding curriculum and rotations Leonard Gralnik, MD, PhD, Karin Esposito, MD, PhD and the rest of the faculty have developed.  The Department also relies on the voluntary clinical faculty for medical student teaching and supervision.  We are grateful to each voluntary faculty member who has contributed their time, effort and expertise to this endeavor.

We look forward to more exciting developments over the rest of this year.  The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Health remains committed to its departmental values, mission based growth and seeking excellence in everything we do.

Patricia Junquera, MD
Assistant Professor and Founding Residency Program Director,
Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Health

Dr Junquera plays an integral part in the development of the psychiatry residency program at Citrus Health Network.  The residency program is expected to provide residency training to 12 residents in a distinct and unique community setting which includes a community mental health center and a Federally Qualified Health Center.  The affiliation between the Department and Citrus Health Network is intended to become an academic teaching model which will be a critical contributor to high quality outcomes for patients, students and residents.

Throughout her career as a board certified Adult Psychiatrist, Dr Junquera, has been dedicated to education, training, administration as well as patient care.  As former Director of the Detox Unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital she was an instrumental piece to the community and the administration developing numerous programs and liaisons between the psychiatric and the medical/legal community.

Dr Junquera is an active member of the Addiction Service Board of Miami Dade County. She is the only physician board member and has been instrumental in improving the medical portion of this statute.  On November 7th, Dr Junquera was part of panel presentation along with Judge Deborah White-Lebora and other members of the service board that presented changes that have been made to the process of the Marchman Act.

Dr Junquera is a councilor for the Florida Psychiatric Society, and serves as the FIU liaison to the Executive Committee of the South Florida Psychiatric Society where she was just elected as President-Elect.  Her experience in both clinical and administrative positions makes her an excellent addition to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health.
