Happy Thursday <<First Name>> –

First, let me apologize. You might think that I merely ghosted you last week, however, I was on a family vacation in beautiful Lake Okoboji (pictured in the heading above). Due to a last-minute dog-sitting snafu, we had to take our pup with us so I had a lot on my mind. Alas, I couldn't get ICYMI shipped before I left and it didn't feel very "vacation-ey" (that's a word now BTW) to hole up in my room and put it together.

However, I'm back and I have a lot to share this week including the best length for your marketing videos, how to keep your phone from being a distraction, and more. Without further ado, let's take a look at what you may have missed last week.

Video Is Popular. But What Length Is Best?

While the average length of a business-related video is just over four minutes, the vast majority of videos produced by businesses are two minutes or less in length. Surprise, surprise—completion rates also go up with shorter video.

Brand Trust Matters (Here’s How You Build It)

New data from the annual Edelman Trust Barometer shows that more people are looking for brands to have an impact on society. Consumers are backing this up with their pocketbooks by increasingly buying goods and services based on belief. However, there’s an obstacle to connecting with these customers: Trust. Here are some new thoughts I put together on how you can close the trust gap and win.

How to Prevent your Phone from Being a Distraction

Here's a helpful short video! I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Whether it's during vacation time like last week or just around the house, I find myself wishing I was looking at my phone less. Daniel Pink interviewed Digital Minimalism author Cal Newport on some specific strategies you can try for minimizing your phone interactions.

6 Outdated Marketing Tactics You Need to Leave in the Past

Here's a fun checklist from The Hour to cross-reference against your current marketing mix. Of course, my favorite is #5 — "Moving away from email." This is a mistake you should avoid.

Help Wanted: I Need Less Than a Minute of Your Time

This year for SXSW I've put together a special LIVE edition of the On Brand podcast focusing on "How to Build a VR Brand." I'll be joined by Amber Osborne of Doghead Simulations and Joanna Popper from HP. But I also need YOUR help. Please take a moment and head to the SXSW Panel Picker site and give our session a quick upvote. And if you're voting, can you take a second and leave a comment as well? Thanks!

Speaking of the On Brand podcast ... Ever been curious about how the Starbucks brand went from good to great? This week's podcast has the back story.

Intermission: Brands as Building Blocks of Our Personal Identity

“The brand has changed from goods and services to a building block of personal identity.” David Lemley knows this first hand. Twenty years ago he led the team that helped Starbucks grow from a boutique coffee shop to a brand many have cited on this show as one that makes them smile consistently. Today, at his company Retail Voodoo, he helps food and beverage brands stand out while also standing for something in the hearts and minds of those they serve. We discussed all of this and more on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast.
