Wiegand Memorial Foundation Lecture
The A&S community is invited to attend the 2022 Wiegand Memorial Foundation Lecture and reception, Bronze Gears and Ethereal Spheres: The Antikythera Mechanism and Ancient Greek Cosmology, with author and historian Alexander Jones of New York University. His work centres on the history and transmission of the mathematical sciences, especially astronomy.

Inaugural Jackman Annual Lecture in the Humanities
The Jackman Humanities Institute has established an annual lecture series to celebrate its 15th anniversary. Thomas Hurka, Jackman Distinguished Chair in Philosophical Studies, will deliver the inaugural Jackman Annual Lecture, co-hosted by Dean Melanie Woodin, with a presentation called Games and the Good Life: From Baseball to Business.

Fireside Chat with Wes Hall
Dean Melanie Woodin will be hosting a fireside chat with Wes Hall — founder of Kingsdale Advisors, dragon from CBC’s Dragons’ Den and respected business leader devoted to removing barriers in the lives of Black Canadians. Hall will reflect on his journey and answer questions. Faculty, staff and members of the A&S community are welcome to join via livestream. Registration required.

Call for Applications: Graduate and Undergraduate Award for Scholarly Achievement in the Area of Gender-Based Violence (PDAD&C #7)
This award was established in 2016 in recognition of the National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women, held each year on December 6. Two awards at $1,500 each are available annually — one for a graduate student and one for an undergraduate student. The award is funded jointly by the Office of the Vice-President & Provost and the Office of the Vice-President, People Strategy, Equity & Culture. Please share with your students.

Call for Proposals: Arts & Science Postdoctoral Fellowships
The Arts & Science Postdoctoral Fellowships are designed to provide outstanding recent doctoral students advanced training in their field of study. These fellowships are not discipline specific, but can be held in any department or research unit across the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto. Applicants must secure sponsorship of a supervisor, or supervisors, from the professoriate (tenure stream) within Arts & Science (St. George Campus).

Data Sciences Institute
- The Data Sciences Speaker Series: This series focuses on data science and its intersection with other fields. Next speaker: Professor Tamara Broderick, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, MIT. Date: September 19, 2022.
- Data Sciences Café: Meet once a week for coffee and receive statistical advice for non-statisticians on how to best analyze data. Date: Thursdays, 1:10–2:15 pm, beginning September 29, 2022. No registration required.
- Data Access Grants: The Data Sciences Institute will provide grants of up to $10,000 to cover costs associated with accessing and working with large data sources that are necessary to carry out data-intensive research projects. Deadline: September 30, 2022.
- Seed Funding for Methodologists: The DSI Seed Funding for Methodologists initiative supports single applicants working in data sciences methodology or theory. Deadline: October 14, 2022.
