  • Welcome Picnic @ Hancock Beach- Wednesday, September 14th. It's our annual fall picnic - all students, faculty, staff and their families are invited to the Department picnic at Hancock beach. The picnic will last from 5-8 pm and food from the Forge BBQ is free! Come and enjoy - rides available around 5 from the parking lot next to the SS Building. Contact Chris Flood at csflood@mtu.edu to arrange a ride. 

  • The Study Abroad Fair will be happening Wednesday, September 14th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm between the EERC and the Library. Stop by and browse this year's selection of study abroad opportunities, including many from the social sciences. 
  • If you have thought about law school but have questions about law school or the admissions process - the MSU College of Law will be visiting on Thursday, September 15th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The visit will be in room 204 of the Academic Office Building. Check your email or contact Professor Susanna Peters at speters@mtu.edu for more info.

  • The undergraduate retreat will be held on September 30th from 2:30-9:00 pm. Stay tuned for more details about this event for all undergraduate majors. 
  • Coffee Conversations have been moved to Mondays. They will be held every Monday from 12:00-1:00 pm starting Monday, September 12th.
  • The Office of Alumni Engagement is offering free professional headshots for students at the Fall Career Fair.  A photographer from Brockit Inc. will be taking photographs on September 21, 2022, from 2-6 p.m. in the SDC. Photos will be taken first come, first served. Each student will take (1) test shot and then will have a limit of (3) posed shots. Please sign up if you intend to utilize this free service. The deadline to sign up is 4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20, 2022.
  • Professors Noel Urban and Carol MacLennan will conduct an on-site tour and discussion of the continuing contamination at Torch Lake on Saturday September 17, 10 a.m. to 12 noon. They will cover the milling and reclamation history of Torch Lake, review the remediation that has been completed to date, and discuss the projects underway by EPA and EGLE to address contaminated sediments, Lake Linden beach, and the submerged barrels at the Hubbell coal dock.

  • The 2022 Michigan Student Voting Summit will be held on September 30th. If you are interested in promoting student voting, and attending workshops and panels please consider applying. There is also opportunity to apply to be a 2022 Michigan Fall Democracy Fellow. This position also centers around promoting student voting but more specifically on our campus. Congratulations! 
  • Prof. Steven Walton has launched a Superior Ideas funding project for the John T. Parsons Project, a history of the corporation that brought the world numerically controlled machining, invented as part of their production of helicopter rotor blades after WWII. The project seeks funding for graduate and undergraduate students' travel and time in the Parsons archive at Virginia Tech, as well as for oral history interviews in the Traverse City region, all of which will become a book on Parsons and the growth of later 20th-century industry in the Grand Traverse region. The Superior Ideas project (https://www.superiorideas.org/projects/john-parsons-history) has just opened, runs to mid-October, and has received a $5000 match from SMI Aero of Traverse City.

The Rural Sociological Society is seeking graduate student volunteers to serve on its Standing Committees for the 2022-2023 academic year. Committees including Awards and Endowment, Diversity, Development, Membership, Publications, Program, and Nominations all need graduate student members. If you are a graduate student looking to get more involved in the society, we encourage you to volunteer. Professional members, if you are working with a graduate student who might be interested in serving, please suggest their name.
