Jubilee,

Join me in fasting and prayer this Wednesday. If you would like an explanation, you can find it below.

FASTING OVERVIEW
Recently, I was listening to a podcast about differences in the global Church and the Church in the United States, and the speaker said something that made me smile. I don't remember the episode or exact wording , but the idea was that the Church in the U.S. tends to experience church individually more than as a community.

An example he cited was how quickly our church parking lots empty because people don't want to linger to talk to each other after the service. I chuckled thinking about how often I cut out lights on people still talking in the sanctuary Sunday mornings... or how people linger in the kitchen after church meetings on school nights.

Sometimes, people apologize to me for staying so long, but really, I'm grateful. You see... I know in our Jubilee covenant we promise to love each other, but it makes me so happy that we also like each other a little.

A Prayer for a Church that Lingers

May we commit to staying "too long" after church,
lingering in conversations about family and fun and work and extracurricular activity schedules.

May our stomachs growl at us to move along.

May we laugh with each other about the awkward moments, the cheesy jokes,  and the comedy specials we just watched.

May we cry with each other and listen well to each other's pain: sharing our difficulties, losses, regrets, and disappointments.

May we commit to serve one another and alongside one other, sharing meals and resources, bagging groceries and moving fridges.

May we make plans to get lunch, play disc golf, watch soccer games, and attend events.

May we commit to expanding our circles and our conversations to include those we haven't before.

And may our parking lot always empty slowly.

Amen
