What do indie authors make?
Short answer? Not much. Well some do better than others.

I thought Amazon annoyed you?
They can at times, but Amazon is the most popular platform to publish on with 67% of the ebook market share. Nook (Barnes & Noble) comes in second at about 20%, with Apple and Kobo with 5% and 3%. I chose Amazon to take advantage of the large market, ads, and Kindle Unlimited.

So what do you make?
On a $3.99 ebook I make 70% which is $2.75. On a $6.99 paperback I make 60% after the printing costs ($3.05) which makes me a whopping $1.15. 

Most authors try to price their paperback so that they make about half of what they do for an ebook. If I wanted to make the same my paperback would have to be $8.99, which I think would dissuade readers.

Hey. Then why is your first poetry book $10.99?
I didn't know how many books I was going to write so I priced it to receive higher royalty. Once my contract is up with the distributor (Friesen Press), I'll move it to Amazon exclusively and drop the price. If you want a signed copy (US/CAN), I still have some from my first and only printing for sale and all the profits go to me because they're sitting right there in a box on my shelf.
