Hello everyone!

In case you missed the last two weeks' pieces about the origins of Ear Acupuncture and some important protocols, here are the links to Part 1 and Part 2. Click on the Archive sign below for previous newsletters covering a wide range of medical topics.

Here is the last part (phew) of the series about Ear Acupuncture and what is the evidence about "ear seeds".

What About Ear Seeds?
You might have seen those kits for sale with ear seeds and a little map of the ear to place the seeds (I found for instance: "The Beginner's Guide to Auricular Therapy is a simple self-reference guide on how to place ear seeds for 19 common conditions including weight loss, pain relief, migraine and menstrual cramps. It is a great starting point for beginners on auriculotherapy using ear seeds. You can start applying ear seeds straight away") - There are some very elegant versions of the seeds (with Chakra color-coded crystals by Swarovski!) and there are also more elemental ones that are vaccaria seeds and are sticking to each "point" with skin color appropriate band aids.

While I'm sure any self care activity such as sticking ear seeds on your ears might provide results and benefits (especially if you routinely apply pressure to the seeds with your fingers. Once they're in place, you massage them two to three times a day. To do this, apply gentle pressure to the seeds and move them in small circles), there is no scientific evidence that they are effective (probably more research is needed too).

Ear seeds provide a type of acupressure that focuses on the ear. Proponents claim that using the seeds in certain spots can stimulate the pressure points to help reduce anxiety, stress, relief from addiction and also support weight loss.

While this may work for some, clinical evidence is lacking and generally of lower quality. A person who wishes to try ear seeds to treat any condition should consult an acupuncturist first. This is to learn the exact positions to place the seeds for anxiety relief. My opinion is that it's hard to locate the points on one's ears without the training. However they are cool jewelry and rather harmless!

While they can't cure chronic pain or other conditions, ear seeds may be a helpful addition to your medical treatment. There aren't many studies but they might help with:

  • Substance abuse
  • Pain, numbness, and tingling from chemotherapy
  • Lower back pain
  • Insomnia
  • Weight loss
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Trauma
  • Grief
  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

As usual always consult with a board certified medical provider instead of self diagnosing or self treating any condition.

 Be well and be safe!
