Aloha Chamber Members,

After a few months on sabbatical leave, I’ve returned to the Chamber full-time. The past year has certainly been a humbling, exciting and inspirational journey. One of the highlights was meeting so many people from different backgrounds across the islands and hearing their stories. It’s clear that there is much work that needs to be done to get our state back on track, rebuild a stronger and more resilient economy and work together for our future.
 
The Chamber is playing a pivotal role in these areas through our work on the advocacy front, economic development, small business support, 4HI policy committees, education and workforce development, and our events and programs. Your investment and engagement are critical to help the Chamber elevate our efforts, so we are grateful for your commitment and support. 
 
I would like to extend my sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Chamber team for their understanding and support in allowing me to pursue this journey, their continued commitment to steer the ship forward to greater accomplishments for our community, and for holding down the fort during my absence. I am so proud of our team and couldn’t have asked for a better ensemble to get things done.

Employment Law Seminar
The annual Employment Law Seminar reached its 29th year when it convened on August 26. The seminar was back in person and brought hundreds of HR and employment law professionals together from throughout the state.

Registrants heard from experts with Torkildson Katz on topics like “Legal Compliance Issues with Hybrid Work” and a funny, yet informative, Kardashian-themed “Unreasonable Accommodations."

Expanding Education and Workforce Opportunities to Hawaii's Incarcerated Populations

On this episode of the Voice of Business Podcast presented by ALTRES, Jo McGarry interviews Katie Kaahanui, Program Manager of Hawaii is Hiring at the Chamber, on the importance of expanding education and training programs to Hawaii's incarcerated population.

Kaahanui discusses her volunteer work through the Women’s Community Correctional Center and Halawa Correctional Facility and how she continuously advocates for providing critically needed resources for individuals re-entering the community. As an academic tutor to incarcerated students who are pursuing their Associate Business Degree at Chaminade University, Kaahanui is passionate about breaking the cycles of crime and helping inmates to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

Through her work at the Chamber with the Hawaii is Hiring program, Kaahanui also sits on the Hawaii team for the U.S Chamber's Smart Justice Initiative which comprises of Chambers throughout the nation working towards elevating this important workforce development issue. Listen and learn more about this fascinating topic from a unique workforce development perspective.

Nainoa Hoe Scholarship Awarded

Congratulations to University of Hawaii Army ROTC Cadet Maria Banaza, also a U.S. Army Reserve unit supply specialist and University of Hawaii - West Oahu student, for receiving this year's #NainoaHoeScholarshipofHonorAward!

Gen. Charles A. Flynn, U.S. Army Pacific commanding general, presents UH Army ROTC Cadet Maria Banaza with a medallion for earning the 15th Annual Nainoa Hoe #Scholarship of Honor award on August 28 during a special military polo event at the Honolulu Polo Club.

The scholarship honors the legacy of service of 1LT Nainoa Hoe, the son of Mr. Allen Hoe, HPC president. Hoe was a UH ROTC graduate and member of the 25th Infantry Division. He was killed in action in January 2005 in Iraq.
