Director’s Note:

Welcome back. It almost feels like normal. It’s obviously too premature to say that we are in a “post-COVID” moment, but it certainly feels like we are on our way there. As some of you might already know, the University has set a target to teach 75% of courses in-person. Cinema is most likely to meet or exceed that target. However, if there was any kind of silver-lining to the pandemic is that it forced us to adapt to the online teaching environment. Many of us were already teaching online prior to the pandemic, but others have grown to appreciate it (e.g., saving people from a commute, increased flexibility with schedules). There are also some real pedagogical advantages for certain kinds of classes to be taught online. The pandemic has changed the academic landscape, and there’s no way to put the genie back in the bottle. Given what we have learned the School of Cinema will be offering courses in a variety of learning modalities. But rest assured that learning modalities will be driven by pedagogical interests first—hands-on classes (surprise, surprise) are best taught in-person.

And continuing the theme of returning to normal, a group of graduate students met at Zeitgeist to enjoy a few drinks in their outdoor patio.

Fun times had by all (including me).

Looking forward to this coming Academic Year!

INTERNATIONAL SUMMER PROGRAM 2022 DOCUMENTARY FILM SCREENING

Please join us on Thursday, September 15th at 6:30 PM in the Coppola Theatre for a screening of the five films produced during the Summer 2022 International Documentary Workshop. The evening begins with a reception at 6:00 PM.

After two years of COVID-19 disruptions with over a year of preparation, the 2022 International Documentary film Workshop was successfully launched and embarked on a new destination in Apulia, Italy. We have 16 undergraduate and graduate students from the School of Cinema who participated in the program this summer. After 3 weeks of intensive work, the students produced 5 short documentary films. The three-week program ended with a successful public film screening at the University of Bari on July 31. Wiemin Zhang was our faculty lead and program coordinator—running this program for over a decade, she noted, “I'm extremely impressed by the hardworking and creative dedication that our students demonstrated throughout the program this summer. I want to especially thank Pietro Pinto, our MFA alumnus (Class 2020) who served as our local coordinator, and the generous support and collaboration from the University of Bari and the Apulia Film Commission.”

The International Documentary Film Workshop has been a flagship program that provides a unique transformational and life-changing experience for the participating students.  Not only do students acquire skills and real-world experience in documentary filmmaking, but they also gain invaluable life experience, the cultural adventure, and the cross-globe friendships they’ll build along the journey will go far beyond the program itself.
