Friday 30th September 2022 sees the release of ELLIE GOWERS’ highly anticipated debut album Dwelling by the Weir. Produced and mixed by Josh Clark (Kate Rusby) at Get Real Audio, musicians include Josh Clark (drums), Ellie Gowers (vocals, guitar), Seth Bye (strings), Lukas Drinkwater (bass), and Ewan Cameron (whistle).
Belonging, love & loss, nostalgia, and home; these themes are embedded in Dwelling by the Weir. Taken from the old Saxon meaning of Ellie’s hometown, Warwick, the album is a collection of songs inspired by the rich history that Warwickshire offers.
When 2020 restricted us to the confines of our homes and daily walks were a part of our regime, Ellie took the opportunity to unearth all that was around her. This natural human fascination of understanding how our home came to be was met with an urge to capture stories and tales of people who had lived and existed in the area. After speaking to local historians, delving into archives, and exploring verdant villages, an album was created.
From equine self-pity to women navigating the waterways, ecological devastation to communities persevering and coming together, Ellie travelled to the sleepiest of hamlets and the busiest of market towns to paint a balanced picture of the county she had grown up in.
Ellie is a songwriter and guitarist from Warwickshire. What grew from a childhood love of literature and traditional folk song is a carefully crafted and emotionally mature catalogue of original material, referencing artists such as Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, and Laura Marling.
Bringing to the stage a strong voice full of expression and maturity, her songs are written with sociological, ecological, and personal themes in mind. These songs at times are sensitive and tender, but are not without the fiery and darker discourse that have labelled Ellie as dynamic and one to watch.
Dwelling by the Weir is set to be released this September. An album that weaves the past, present, and future together, it is an exploration of the folklore, stories, and people that made her home county of Warwickshire what it is today.
