An Invitation from ICTE to reclaim your teaching joy

Remember...
The moment you knew you wanted to be a teacher?
The thrill you felt when you first stepped into a classroom as the teacher?

What do you do each day to create a learning environment filled with passion and energy?
We know that there are some very real problems facing teachers, schools, students. These issues are not going to go away by focusing on what brings us joy. But taking time to honor and reflect on all the good that occurs daily in our schools--the things that WE make possible--gives us the buoyancy to withstand the negative undertow, to patiently explain (again) that stories matter, that writing leads to deeper learning, that true systemic change must be informed by the voices of the students, teachers, librarians, administrators, and support staff who work in those schools.

This year ICTE invites you to reclaim your teaching joy. Let's take time to celebrate all the amazing things happening in our classrooms and communities. Here's how you can get involved--
  • Shop Talks Held online monthly, this is a place to share books, ideas, and strategies that light up your classroom and community. Put these dates on your calendar & let us know if you'd like to be on a panel for one of the topics:

    • November 15: Writing Gratitude

ICTE Special Event

On September 22 at 7:00 p.m. ET, during Banned Books Week, NCTE is hosting an online event, This Story Matters: An Intellectual Freedom Discussion with NCTE Affiliates. ICTE is cosponsoring this event.

As the school year begins, teachers and students are facing challenges to their intellectual freedom like never before. From state legislation to executive orders to school district policies to administrator actions, book bans are at an all-time high, and teacher shortages are affecting every corner of the nation. But as an ELA educator, you do not have to face these difficult circumstances alone.

Join leadership from NCTE’s Standing Committee Against Censorship, members from across the country, a host of state and regional affiliates, and Penguin Random House Education during Banned Books Week to learn about the landscape of censorship challenges in the classroom, discover what resources are available to you from NCTE and on the local level, and share uplifting ways to encourage students’ right to read and teachers’ freedom to teach.

This event is open to NCTE members, NCTE affiliate members, and any interested literacy educator. Register to attend. You will be asked to log in or create an account.
