WALLA WALLA COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER FOR PRO-CHOICE PROTEST

This past Saturday, September 10th, Walla Walla and Whitman community members gathered in Pioneer Park to protest in support of nationwide access to abortion. The event was organized by RiseUp4AbortionRights and included speeches from impassioned public figures and organization leaders.

PRESIDENT BOLTON OUTLINES HER PLANS FOR WHITMAN'S FUTURE

President Bolton has begun her official tenure as Whitman's 15th President. In an interview with the Wire, Bolton shares her assessment of Whitman and her 
priorities for the upcoming year. The interview delves into Bolton's goals surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, her concerns for student health and wellness and what makes Whitman a successful college.

MAKING WHITMAN WHITE AGAIN

What is the definition of "White"? According to the U.S. Census Bureau and Whitman College, a White person is anyone "having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa." Opinion writer Ahmed Elsayed challenges this definition, claiming that Whitman's categorization of MENA (Middle Eastern and North African) students as White is a harmful form of erasure. He writes, "removing or leaving out the MENA category from Whitman's racial/ethnic categories...isolates and otherizes MENA students, faculty and staff, causing constant identity erasure and confusion."

Walk around Whitman, and you’ll hear ample, unabashed discussion of crying. Step into the alcoves of an academic building, and you might even hear some crying! Many of us discuss it easily in passing — frustrated tears over a last-minute essay or an accidental cry during office hours. Students Buddy Muench, Warren Davis and Sonia Xu share their experiences with crying in college and their thoughts on the value (or lack thereof) of having a good sob.

WHITMAN COMMUNITY REFLECTS ON THE PASSING OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II

On Sept. 8, the world was faced with the news that Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96. Queen Elizabeth II was the United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch and reigned for 70 years. Her eldest son has now been elevated to the throne as King Charles III. Associate Professor of History Lynn Sharp and student Izzy Mullins reflect on the Queen's impact and her lasting legacy.
