What's up this week with
Believers On Mountain Bikes (BOMB)

Weekly Update

It's hot for September, but wasn't bad once we got pedaling up Deer Creek last week.  This week if Chimney Gulch.  Note we are switching to an eariler start time of 5:30 and that we start the Chimney Gulch ride from the Golden Library off of 10th street.

Devotional
Some of you know that I (Doug) have been battling with a rattling noise in my new Scott Spark that is coming from the rear of the bike.  That led me to take apart the bike - pivots, cables, every bolt, etc.  This is the 2nd time I’ve taken the bike apart but first time I also pulled the brake cable.  I put dampening foam on the cables, regreased what needed to be regreased, put thread locker on what needed to be thread locked, ran new cables, and torqued everything to spec.  Before I did all of that I thoroughly cleaned the frame.  I also hand banged the front triangle to see if I could figure out the rattling - nothing (as a side note it was rattling and squeaking).  I then turned the frame upside down and put it on the carpet as I was going to thoroughly inspect the inside of the frame, again.  I then heard a marble-like thing roll down the frame and out the headset area.  A sizable rock was stuck in the frame.  I believe it was stuck between the bottom bracket sleeve and the frame and the reason it never showed itself until I was hand banging on it and turned it upside down.  How did it get there - well not too long ago the shock cover fell off the bike and likely kicked a rock just perfectly in the frame.  I was listening to the song by Brooke Lightwood - honey in the rock - and thought - not every rock has honey in it.

There are several stories in the Bible that talk about rocks, or where there is definitely honey in the rock.  Consider:

Psalm 81:13-16.  “If my people would only listen to me, if Israel would only follow my ways,
14 how quickly I would subdue their enemies  and turn my hand against their foes! 15 Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him,  and their punishment would last forever. 16 But you would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”

This applies to us now, just as it did to Israel - if we follow the ways of Jesus, there will be honey in the rock and we will be satisfied.  All the material possessions in the world can’t provide that…only Jesus.

Exodus 17:6 - 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.

Here, God told Moses to strike the rock and water came out to provide a need for the Israelites - water.  Later Moses was punished for striking a different rock because God told Moses to speak to the rock.

Matthew 21:42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “’The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?

The ultimate rock is Jesus - the cornerstone that holds everything up, and that the building relies on to stand.

Revelation 10:9-11  9So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’ a ” 10I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11Then I was told, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.”

Here, God’s commands written on the scroll are sweet as honey - they are good.  Ezekiel experienced this, as well.  The likely reason it turns the stomach sour is because the words are harsh - judgment - and not judgment people that don’t believe in Jesus want to hear (or even those that believe but give lip service to God).

The word of God and God’s amazing grace is sweet as honey!  A rock in a bike frame is not.

There's honey in the rock
Water in the stone
Manna on the ground
No matter where I go
I don't need to worry now that I know
Everything I need You've got
There's honey in the rock
