Headmaster's Message

The Extra Curricular Richness of Sacred Heart

Last week Sacred Heart College competed in the “Winter Tournament Week”. Our athletes, teachers and parents travelled the length of New Zealand engaging in various sports. The week was not only successful from a sporting perspective, but feedback from staff also informs me it was an excellent opportunity to build school spirit, bond as a team, relax, sightsee, and enjoy the company of others. I salute and applaud all the adults involved, who freely gave their time and expertise, often sacrificing work and family commitments to support our teams.

The AIMS games held in Tauranga this week is another example of generosity and self-sacrifice in support of our Intermediate students. We are very grateful.

I also wish to make a special note of thanks to Mrs Tracy Purcell, Deputy Headmaster - Pastoral, for her efforts to secure funding for ten students and one teacher to undertake a Spirit of Adventure sailing trip.   This is an experience of a lifetime that would not have happened without her initiative.

The core business of Sacred Heart College is academic achievement, which we do exceptionally well. It is also deeply gratifying that the extra curricula life of the school is so rich. The opportunities outside the classroom are varied and exciting. They happen largely because of manaakitanga to our Catholic and Marist values and putting others before self.

COVID-19 has robbed our boys of many extra-curricular experiences over the last three years. It has been an absolute delight to see them out and about enjoying sport, music and field trips. I am mindful that this added richness to their lives takes the goodwill and mahi of others. For that I thank you.

Patrick Walsh

Special Character

Book of Kells

Seventy years after a facsimile copy of the Book of Kells, (a 1200 year old Book of the Gospels) was presented to the College by Mr Joseph and Mrs Agnes Mahon, it was moved from the Cole Library to the Old Boys’ Memorial Chapel. The two-volume limited edition was produced in Switzerland in 1951.
Last Tuesday, during a special assembly, the Books were rededicated and blessed by Fr Stephen in the presence of Mrs Cundall (the sole daughter of the original benefactors), her daughters Helen, Kate and family, students and staff. Mrs Cundall had three brothers attend Sacred Heart College, Edward, David and Joseph, all now living overseas. Hunter Ngata, currently in Year 11, is a Mahon great-grandson.

The community is indeed fortunate to have such a taonga that students and staff can ponder over and give thanks for the thoughtfulness of a generous Sacred Heart College family.

Thanks to students Zion Shore, Brayden Farmer, Daniel Abraham, Nikau Cook, Michael Sanderson and Kaea Luke for the karakia.

Art, Music and Culture

Malo e lelei famili,
This week we celebrate the Tongan language week. The theme for this year is “Ke Tu'uloa 'a e lea faka-Tonga 'i Aotearoa”, which means sustaining the Tongan Language in Aotearoa. The word TU'ULOA means to continuously grow, nurture, and sustain a valued idea, practice, event, or memory in an enduring way. This has been evident through our Tongan cohort of around 100 students who value their Tongan language highly. Some are very fluent and can recite the Lord’s prayer in Tongan.

Therefore, we endeavour to encourage our Tongan students to embrace their culture through the use of the language. "Papata pē, ka na’e lalanga – it may be coarse in texture but it was woven" which in this context means, some may not be 100% fluent but at least they are learning/speaking it.

At the start of the year our Tongan cultural group was very successful in their performance being the winners of their division. And our speakers at Polyfest were able to place very high in their various Year Level competitions. We congratulate our Tongan group again for their very successful 2022 Polyfest season. We wish our Tongan senior students, and all students, the best for their Mock Exams.

Basketball

Nationals Bound!

Our 1st V secured the 7th and final spot for the upcoming BBNZ Basketball National Tournament defeating St Peter’s College 74-63 in a grueling final match at the AA Zone 1 Premiership National Qualifiers last Saturday evening. In a year of many firsts for this team – 2 National Team trialists, promotion into the Premier grade, 2 Premier grade wins – this achievement is special as it is the first time in school history that a basketball team from Sacred Heart College has made it into the National Tournament, securing one of the top 24 spots in the country!

Our sincere thanks to Tayla Robinson and Old Boy Josh Malolo for preparing and guiding our boys before and throughout the tournament, and to manager Ms Angela Babich for keeping the boys organised and well nourished! Our thanks also to our awesome Student Manager Lau Pulotu, the many people who travelled over the bridge to support our boys throughout the tournament, alongside those who supported us online during our livestreams. We look forward to your continued support in October when we travel to Palmerston North!

Recent Hostel Open Day

Our 2022 Hostel Open Day was a real success with a large number attending. We are pleased with the positive feedback and the number of new applicants for 2023. We would like to extend our thanks to Mrs Kelly Byers and her son Max, our Head Boarder, who both shared their honest experiences of boarding. This was well received and appreciated by everyone present. Naturally, there were a few anxious parents and boys on the day, but Mrs Byers' reassuring words helped ease their minds about the benefits of boarding. Thanks also to the staff and boarders who played a large part in the success of the Open Day. Their presence and full participation as role models for the Hostel was greatly appreciated.
