Practical Tips for Busy Children's Leaders

Small… but brave!

Object lessons can stick very clearly long after a lesson is taught. Use this very simple object lesson with common household items to illustrate a big point. Can be used with many lessons, but goes well specifically with David and Goliath.
Materials Needed:
1 small match
1 large, thick nail
Some red tape (or just a piece of red paper and some masking tape)

Show the match to the children and explain that, just like that match, we are very small. We are very fragile (break the match in half). We are not brave at all by ourselves. But God is much bigger than we are (show the nail) and much stronger, too. If we trust him and stay very close to him through faith in Christ (stick the match to the nail with the red tape/red paper + tape), he will help us. Then we can be brave, even if we are small.
[*“Just think of David. He was small and his family didn't care about him, but he trusted in God. God helped him fight the giant Goliath.”] *Insert your connecting Bible passage here.
