NINA'S NOTES

Fotografe Shiva Faber volgde Nina in de periode na haar transitie tot vrouw. Deze foto-documentaire heeft geleid tot een hoogst persoonlijk boek: ‘Nina’s Notes’.
 
‘Nina’s Notes’ toont in beelden - soms heel dicht op de huid - het traject, dat Nina aflegde om te transformeren van man naar vrouw. Fotografe Shiva Faber combineerde haar baan als artdirector met een studie fotografie aan kunstacademie St. Joost. Ze leerde Nina kennen via haar werk, en vroeg of ze haar in de periode na de transitie tot vrouw mocht volgen voor haar afstudeerproject.
 

Persoonlijke beelden
Tussen de foto-documentaire en het verschijnen van het boek zat een lange periode, vertelt Shiva Faber: ”Na mijn afstuderen wilde ik meer doen met het fotoproject, maar Nina wilde nog niet met deze persoonlijke beelden naar buiten treden. Fred Guurink, een goede vriend van Nina, vond dat ze er iets mee moest doen. Hij heeft haar een paar jaar geleden geïnterviewd, en ik ben begonnen met het selecteren van foto’s voor een boek.” 
 
Eigen verhaal
‘Nina’s Notes’ bevat behalve de inleiding en het interview door Guurink vrijwel geen tekst. Het boek draait om de afbeeldingen, hier en daar afgewisseld door korte maar indringende fragmenten van medische en officiële documenten. Faber: “Het boek heeft verder geen tekst nodig. Het bestaat uit foto’s, waar iedereen een eigen verhaal bij mag maken.”

Photographer Shiva Faber followed Nina in the period after her transition to a woman. This photo documentary has resulted in a highly personal book: 'Nina's Notes'.
 
Nina's Notes' shows in images - sometimes very close to the skin - the trajectory that Nina took to transform from man to woman. Photographer Shiva Faber combined her job as an art director with a photography study at the St. Joost art academy. She got to know Nina through her work, and asked if she could follow her for her graduation project during the period after the transition to a woman.

Personal images
There was a long period between the photo documentary and the publication of the book, says Shiva Faber: ”After graduating I wanted to do more with the photo project, but Nina did not want to come out with these personal images yet. Fred Guurink, a good friend of Nina, thought she should do something with it. He interviewed her a few years ago, and I started selecting photos for a book.”
 
Own story
Apart from the introduction and the interview by Guurink, 'Nina's Notes' contains virtually no text. The book revolves around the images, interspersed here and there by short but penetrating fragments of medical and official documents. Faber: “The book needs no further text. It consists of photos, to which everyone can make their own story.”
