Workshop Series: Local Investing in Montana

NC3 is partnering with The Center for Community Ownership to host the Local Investing in Montana Workshop Series. The four-part online workshop led by Michael Shuman, author of Put Your Money Where Your Life Is, will teach participants how we can use our power as local investors to transform economies.

This workshop series is designed to help you and your community develop practical local investment strategies to boost our local economies. They are a deep dive into topics that will empower attendees to take real local investment action in their communities.

Together we will learn how grassroots investors can invest locally, how businesses can find local capital, and how policymakers can use their tools to facilitate local investment.

The workshop will be Montana-focused, but everyone is welcome to attend! Registration cost is sliding scale.

Looking for support on your community capital project?

NC3’s membership base has knowledge and practical skills to share with new investors and organizers that are hoping to build their own community investing initiatives. We aim to connect our members to the general public, allowing new projects to flourish with the professional support of community capital experts within our network.

To this end, we recently launched the Technical Assistance (TA) Directory. We hope this TA Directory will help activists in the community capital movement by connecting them with high quality support as they develop their community capital project.

ICYMI:
Michigan Legislature Moves Forward on Local Investment Tax Credit

After months of advocacy by NC3 Board Chair Chris Miller, lawmakers in the Michigan State Legislature reached an agreement this summer for passing the nation’s first tax credit for local investors. Based on a similar law in New Brunswick, Canada, the Michigan law would provide local investors with a 50% state tax credit on local investments (up to $3,000 annually).

“We’re not talking about big business. We’re not talking about corporate tax breaks,” explained the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Bronna Kahle. “We’re talking about everyday people having the opportunity that only accredited investors, or venture capitalists, or angel investors would have previously had. We’re talking about small businesses. We’re talking about thriving main streets in your local communities.”

The passage of laws like this around the country could be a huge boon to local investment, and NC3 will continue to share news and lessons from this advocacy process. Read more about the Michigan House Bill 4116 here
