Sermon on the Mount

How not to Pray

Before Jesus teaches His disciples how they should pray, He addresses how not to pray. He exposes the practices of the Pharisees (hypocrites) and the Gentiles (pagans), revealing why their prayers are self-glorifying and empty—not a model for us. As we look underneath the motives that led them to pray the way they did, we will see a profound misunderstanding of who God is—His nature and His attributes. In our own prayer life, we too can have a misunderstanding of who God is and how we are to approach Him in prayer. The lessons Jesus taught those who were listening then, are lessons He is teaching us today. Do we have the right view of God? Are our prayers any indication of how we might be following a similar path to those Jesus was rebuking? As we approach the Lord’s prayer and how Jesus taught His disciples to pray, we must first discover how He told them not to pray. Prayer is a tremendous gift. Listening to our Savior’s teaching on prayer is life-changing.

Invite friends and family to worship in-person with us at 8:00 (Chapel), 9:30 or 11:00 a.m. or online at pcpc.org/live/, the PCPC App with an iOS or Android device, Facebook, or YouTube.

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

Our culture tells us that scientific evidence and faith in God are at odds, and this assumption can often cause doubt in our own hearts or anxiety over sharing our faith with others.
