Brick-or-Treat delivers family-friendly thrills, Families build life-long memories at Legoland
One of Kurt Stocks’ favorite things about LEGOLAND is the park’s opportunity to help bring families together to interact and create lifelong memories. It’s the main reason he took the job at LEGOLAND Malaysia and eventually as President of LEGOLAND California Resort in Carlsbad.

“It’s really powerful when you think about it. The impact you can have on a family and their experience, creating memories and experiences from a holiday that they’ll talk about for the rest of their lives,” said Stocks. “It’s not just about operating rides – it’s about delivering experiences, and you can really make an impact.”

BRICK-OR-TREAT MONSTER PARTY

LEGOLAND’s next special experience is their Brick-or-Treat presents Monster Party. It runs every Saturday from September 17 to October 29 from 10 am to 9 pm, and on Sunday, October 30 from 10 am to 8 pm. Entrance to the special event is included in the regular ticket price and select annual passes.

Brick-or-Treat is a family-centered Halloween experience focusing on kids ages 2-12, but guests of all ages are invited to dress up and enjoy the celebration. Expect to meet a few new Halloween LEGO Monster characters; family-friendly entertainment including the LEGO Rock Band; themed rides including the newly themed Disco Dragon Coaster; and a new 4D movie called “The Great Monster Chase.”

“[The Great Monster Chase] is really fun. It’s not scary,” said Stocks. “It will catch kids by surprise a couple of times, but it will make them laugh, and they’ll have a good time.” The film includes 4D special effects including bubbles, water, and more.

LIVE, WORK & PLAY NORTH COUNTY

Open almost every day of the year, LEGOLAND’s presence in Carlsbad has economically impacted the city and the region tremendously, directly and by bringing more tourism to the area, which helps many industries rise. At peak times, LEGOLAND hires upwards of 3,000 people, creating jobs for residents who typically reinvest in the area.

“We've been a part of the county now for 23 years. We started a lot smaller than we are now. There’s been a lot of progress in 23 years, and I’d like to think that in the next 23 years, there will be the same level of progress in terms of the resort offering and what we give back to North County,” said Stocks.

Stocks and his family love living in North County. As much as they loved their time in Southeast Asia while Stocks worked in the health and fitness industry and subsequently LEGOLAND Malaysia, “once we had a chance to come here and have a look at what was in North County, we just kind of fell in love with it,” said Stocks.

“The community is very tight here. It’s nice to feel appreciated. Everyone is really supportive, has mutual appreciation for others and everything they do,” said Stocks.

An active family, Stocks and his family love the weather, opportunities for outdoor activities and easy access to activities, and great schools. But one of their favorite afternoon activities to do with their three young kids is – you guessed it – spend an afternoon at LEGOLAND.

North County beaches represent 5 out of ‘Top 6 San Diego Beach Towns ’

World Atlas has named Oceanside, Del Mar, Carlsbad Solana, and Encinitas as five out of six of San Diego’s Top Beach Towns. La Jolla was honored as the sixth. Here are some of the things they loved about each of our North County locations:

Oceanside – Wide beaches and historical sites like the Oceanside Pier and Mission San Luis Rey.
Del Mar – Del Mar Fairgrounds for its county fair, racetracks, and RV campsite, Dog Beach, Torrey Pines State Nature Reserve, and Del Mar Farmers Market
Carlsbad – Consistently a top-rated beach town in California, cute beach houses with views of the shoreline, Legoland, and the Flower Fields.
Solana – Cedros Design District and Fletcher Cove Park with grassy quarters, playgrounds, and a basketball court.
Encinitas – Previously named one of the Top 20 Surf Towns in the world by National Geographic, year-round local surf tournaments, called the “Flower Capital of the World,” and the San Diego Botanic Garden.

‘Solutions for Change’ addresses family homelessness without taxpayer funding

On September 9, Solutions for Change announced an expansion of its unique approach to addressing the impacts of homelessness – a network of private resources without government funding.

An estimated $200,000+ of government funding is needed to address the care of one homeless family per year in California. At Solutions for Change, the end-to-end cost per year/per family is $42,000.

Solutions Academy is a university-like setting where families discover hope-filled purpose and forever change the course of their lives. Escondido’s Little Hands Farm granted $50K for farm-to-school project

Three San Diego County projects have been awarded farm-to-school grants from the USDA: Little Hands Farm in Escondido, ICF Center for Cross Border Philanthropy in National City and Heaven’s Windows in Spring Valley.

Escondido’s Little Hands Farm will partner with schools within a 30-mile radius where more than half of the children are underserved minorities, socioeconomically disadvantaged and eligible for free or reduced-price meals. The farm will provide sustainably grown fresh vegetables. The focus is gearing this fresh produce to children by connecting them to the produce and to the farm, building relationships with schools, and doing taste tests with the children.

Since the USDA Farm-to-School Program’s start in 2013, the department has awarded nearly $75 million in Farm-to-School Grants, funding more than 1,000 projects. These projects have reached over 25 million students in nearly 60,000 schools.

By one estimate, 30% of small businesses will be the victim of some sort of significant fraud or theft with the median loss for businesses with under 100 employees at $200,000.  Moreover, only 47% of those losses are ever recovered or covered by third-party guarantors.  For other small business owners, the loss is straight off their top line, putting many at dire risk of failure and closure.

Join us for an SDNEDC Lunch & Learn to hear about some of the simple steps you can take to protect your business; the latest trends in the kinds of threats that small businesses of all types are facing; and some ways to balance the importance of protection with business speed and efficiency.
