OPD Career Exploration Series: Research Careers in Industry - Recent Transitions 🟡

This panel will focus specifically on professionals who have recently started their role within the last year. Medical School 3 Minute Thesis Competition ⚪️

The University of Minnesota Medical School Office of Professional Development is hosting a 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition for the Medical School graduate programs, and the winners of our competition will advance to the UMN-wide competition. The 3MT challenges students to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance in just 3 minutes using language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. This is a great opportunity to develop and showcase your communication skills! Previous winners are not eligible to participate. We invite you to participate as a competitor or as a spectator in the competition - please RSVP using the link above. Snacks and coffee will be provided!

The Graduate School invites the winners of this competition to the UMN-wide 3MT competition final round on Friday, November 11, 2022, from 10 - 11:30AM, Coffman Union Theater. Participants are encouraged to check out a new preparation course developed by Dr. Ben Rein to assist them in preparing for the competition.

Note: The BMBB and MCDB&G programs will compete in the College of Biological Sciences 3MT competition, and are thus not eligible to compete in this Medical School 3MT competition. BMBB and MCDB&G students are still welcome to attend this event as audience members!

Without a well-thought-out strategy, we may wind up losing the talent we want to retain. If we want to go beyond mere representation and create a workplace that is welcoming, inclusive, and makes all feel like they belong—a workplace where everyone can be seen, heard, and participate, and thrive—we'll need to take the right steps.

Tools for Organizing PDFs and Article Citations, hosted by the UMN Libraries 🔴⚪️

Citation managers are tools to help you collect, organize, cite, and share research. This session will give overviews of Zotero, a free, easy to use citation manager, and EndNote, a paid, high-powered citation manager. After an introduction to both to help you decide which one will work best for you, we will split into two breakout rooms where you will learn how to set up your citation manager and use it to collect and organize citations, PDFs, and other files.  We will also demonstrate how to format citations in a variety of styles and how to add in-text citations to Microsoft Word and Google Docs, as well as share citations with others using the group feature.

Organizations across the world participate by holding special events, many of which are virtual and open to researchers from any institution. Resources & Opportunities

Accepting Nominations: HHMI Gilliam Program
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study program is now accepting nominations for the 2023 cycle. Three-year fellowships will be awarded to advisor-student pairs, with each pair comprising an eligible graduate student engaged in her/his PhD dissertation research and thesis adviser. The Gilliam Program seeks to ensure that students from groups historically excluded from and underrepresented in science are prepared to assume leadership roles in science and science education and to foster the development of a healthier, more inclusive academic scientific ecosystem. As an institutional award, the University is soliciting nominations campus-wide from eligible adviser-student pairs to be approved for submitting University-endorsed applications to the 2023 Gilliam Fellowship for Advance Study award. For consideration, the pre-proposal must be submitted via InfoReady by September 16, 2022.

Applications Open: Baylor College of Medicine Postdoctoral Research Opportunities in Science 🟡
Are you interested in exploring your options for postdoctoral training? Postdoctoral Research Opportunities in Science (PROS) at Baylor College of Medicine allows you to meet faculty and trainees from multiple labs and learn about our resources in the Texas Medical Center. PROS facilitates the matching between you and faculty with aligned interests and we provide you with guidance and support throughout the exploration process. View the list of interested faculty and training programs that are currently seeking postdoctoral researchers. Candidates are expected to meet virtually with at least 3 prospective faculty mentors during the month of November. The application is due by October 31, 2022.

Applications Open: UMN Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility Grants
Two UMN grants are currently open for global health research:
  • Fogarty Global Health Fellows: These 12-month research fellowships provide outstanding opportunities for highly motivated doctoral students and postdocs to experience research training at research sites in Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, Ghana, Liberia, Peru, Thailand, Nepal and India. Each year the fellowships begin with an intensive orientation program at the NIH campus in July, followed by mentored research training at international partner institutions. Postdoctoral trainees and doctoral students from the US and from partner countries in the health professions are eligible to apply. Applications due November 1, 2022.
  • CGHSR Scholars: CGHSR Scholars are University of Minnesota doctoral students, postdocs, and recent master's level graduates who complete 8–12 months of mentored research at an international study site. Scholars will work on an active research study led by faculty from UMN and/or from their partner institution. Scholars will be expected to contribute to the study in a role that is appropriate for their course of study and level of training, and specific responsibilities will be discussed and decided between the proposed mentor and the trainee. Applications due January 14, 2023.
