Current Lakewood Library Services

The Pierce County Library System continues to serve the community with pop-up libraries and other services with community partners throughout Lakewood. From book talks for adults and tech help to family story time for the whole family, the Library System is offering services for all ages. Some of the services will be held at the Tillicum Community Center and some at Lakewood City Hall while many will pop up in various places around the community.

Visit lakewoodlib.pcls.us for up-to-date info on services and locations.

As always, the Library System continues to provide books and materials directly to childcare centers as well as adult care facilities in Lakewood. These services continue to be very valued.

In June, the Library System closed the aging Lakewood Library at Wildaire Road SW, because it was in critical condition with significant safety concerns. In addition to the Current Lakewood Library Services, the Library System encourages you to visit nearby DuPont, Steilacoom, Tillicum and University Place Pierce County libraries.

In September 2022, workers installed tarps where the most significant deterioration on the roof of the current Lakewood Library is located, to prepare for the upcoming rainy season. While tarps cannot completely prevent further water damage, installing tarps is the only option to attempt to reduce further deterioration as the Library System awaits the Community Advisory Committee’s recommendation about the building long-term.

Community Advisory Committee meeting

The Lakewood Library Buildings Community Advisory Committee will conduct its third of five meetings on Friday, September 16, 1-3 p.m.

Watch in-person at the Pierce County Library System’s Administrative Center, 3005 112th St. E., Tacoma, or join the meeting via Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82671218820 Meeting ID: 826 7121 8820 or call: 253-215-8782 and enter the meeting ID: 826 7121 8820.

At the meeting, the volunteer committee will review input from the community about library services and buildings in downtown Lakewood and the Tillicum neighborhood. More than 2,000 people responded to a survey about library services, as well as provided input at public events, and community leaders provided feedback through interviews.

The Pierce County Library will also provide information about costs to build and operate public libraries and the City of Lakewood will provide information about the City's senior center as an opportunity to co-locate services with a future Lakewood Library. The committee will also move toward identifying how it will evaluate options to make a recommendation about the best way to delivery quality library services in Lakewood.

The committee is charged with the following:
  • Understanding public input from 2019.
  • Assessing public input gathered this summer in surveys, interviews, and at public events.
  • Reviewing the significant building needs.
  • Providing advice to the Library System about how it could best provide library services for Lakewood.
For the Lakewood Pierce County Library, the committee is expected to recommend whether to:
  • Retain the current facility.
  • Build a new library on a different site.
  • Build a new library on the current site.
  • Renovate another building elsewhere in the community.
For the Tillicum Pierce County Library, the committee is expected to recommend whether to:
  • Retain the current facility.
  • Build a new library on a different site.
The committee is projected to give its recommendation to the Library Board of Trustees and City Council in fall 2022. The Board of Trustees will determine next steps.
