I’m writing to you from Brussels! I arrived a few days ago and am getting settled and ready for the MA! I haven't explored much of the city yet, but I hope I can share more news in the coming months!
I did buy my first french book today! The struggle of finding one's socks is a very dear subject to me.

I spent the last few weeks packing stuff from my house in Porto and mercyless throwing things out. Amongst them was an enormous ammount of sketches I had for a book I never made. I had been carrying them to every house for almost ten years, and it was time to let go. (I still have scans! Don’t worry!)

Many years ago, I had this idea of making a comic based on the life of Antónia Rodrigues — a Portuguese woman who escaped domestic violence, pretended to be a man to get a job on a ship, ended up in Morocco, became a knight, and had eventually to come clean about her identity when a woman from a wealthy family fell in love with her. She had to quit the army but still got awarded money for her service and married a fellow soldier.

I guess I never managed to make the book because I never got to find the perfect way to tell the story. I tried adding things, making it more fictional, but that took away from the amazing facts. On the other hand, I was also not prepared to do a well-researched and historically correct book.

It was also hard to present a protagonist that pretty much got famous for killing Muslims. I don't think it's impossible, I think there are a lot of likeable things about her, but the book needed to be very self-aware.

Anyway, I was stuck and stopped working on it.
But I didn’t let it go completely. Who knows. I may figure it out one day.
