Why the Chaplaincy
Dear Supporters of the Chaplaincy,
Over the course of a couple of weeks during the summer, I was again reminded of the importance of the Chaplaincy for the Carlington Community. One day I stopped by to see Steve, our Chaplain; I had to wait a couple of minutes as he finished counselling the 5th person of the day. Our treasurer, who spends one morning a week in the office, has also noted the steady stream of people going to see Steve.
Another day, a resident asked when would the Drop-in be reopening because she missed it so much and when I went to the Art Studio, an artist whom I hadn’t seen for a couple of years because of the pandemic, was really excited to show me her paintings; new people have also joined the Creative Path program. Some of our artists are really quite accomplished and I realized we need a way to show our artists’ creations to the wider public. One day our volunteer for the breakfast program said, “Hey, we broke a record today; we handed out 121 bagged breakfasts.’’ This sad “record” has now also been broken but it speaks to the struggle the residents have to buy food. The challenge for the Chaplaincy is to find new ways to fund our programs and recruit new volunteers as we support our neighbours in the Carlington community.
