Come see what's on this year's grill!

Join friends and neighbours at  HVRA’s Fall Fair!
Sunday, September 11, noon - 6 pm
Margaret Fairley Park

We’re back this year in person!  Featuring live music, BBQ, kids’ activities, bake sale, silent auction, hourly raffle, and more!   Harbord Village Heritage, Nags Players, Harbord Village Gardeners and the Net Zero committee will all run engaging community tables. You can also check your HVRA membership status, renew, or join up.  Meet your neighbours, learn more about HVRA activities, eat, drink, relax, have fun!  More details here.

We still need volunteers to help flip burgers or serve food. Please contact Kerry Clare at arearepnw@harbordvillage.com if you are available for an hour or two.

Help us go green! Participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable plates, cups and utensils.

Don’t miss the "Heritage Table" at the Fall Fair
“Heritage” includes not only history and built heritage but also tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Lena Mortensen and Leslie Thompson want to encourage people to come and chat about any of the questions below. They'd also like to encourage folks to bring, share, talk about any artifacts they might have found in their houses (when they moved in, through renovations, or just general exploration) that pre-date their residence in that home/space.
  • Who lived in my house in 1890 and possibly other years?
  • What stories do the artifacts found in my house tell?
  • What is the architectural style of my house and when was it likely built?
  • Who has lived in Harbord Village?  demographics, immigrant waves
  • What languages are spoken in Harbord Village?
  • What stories can you tell me about people who have lived in this neighbourhood?
  • How do I find out more about the heritage of Harbord Village and the City of Toronto?

Bloor Borden Farmers Market Celebrates the Harvest Moon (September 10)
From organiser Terri Chu:

“Look up on Saturday night! You will see the Harvest moon, one of the most important dates on the Luni-solar calendar. Go into any Chinese grocery store and you will see stacks of mooncakes. The yolks inside represent the full moon. Mooncakes are meant to be shared with friends and family and we tend to go all out for them. Historically, they are made with lotus paste, but these days they come in all sorts of flavours. We have large meals representing the abundant harvest and finish it off with the mooncakes.

"So make sure you get extra goodies this week as it'll be the tail end of the summer goods as the season switches to fall treasures - which are great now, but you'll be crying you never want to see a potato again around mid-March.”

The market continues on Wednesdays, from 3 - 7 pm, in the Green P lot SW of Bloor & Borden Sts., until the end of October.  You can get the latest info and sign up for Terri’s weekly updates on their website.

Concerned About Climate Change and Your Own Health and Safety? Try replacing your gas stove with an Induction Stove
Induction stoves are not only faster, cleaner and more energy efficient than gas stoves, they are also safer.  No open flame, no hot burners and no noxious gas emissions in your kitchen and home. The HV Net Zero Carbon Project has negotiated with Best Buy to offer discounts between $300-$800 on a variety of ranges and cooktops. For more information on how to contact Best Buy about this offer, go to the Net Zero website.

Unique Coffee / Record shop combo makes appearance on BlogTO
Emissions Records / Major Treat Coffee, a joint project of three friends from the local hardcore scene, opened back in June at the site of the former Joe’s Cleaners on Brunswick. (This is a second location for Major Treat, which has a joint business with Town Barber on Queen St W.) Customers are already raving about the record selection and service; employee Chris, who worked previously at Suspect Video, enthused about the range of punk sub-genres they stock, from 1970s through to today, international to Canadian to local talent.  (The only thing they don’t stock is music that promotes hate.)  Those who have perhaps tired of their old records or who are clearing out space will be interested to know that the store also buys used vinyl in good condition. You can watch the brief but highly descriptive report here.

Harbord Village’s Secret Jimi Hendrix garden
The Jimi Hendrix Sculpture Garden, hidden in an alley at 736 Spadina Ave., beside the Mosaic apartment block south of the JCC, features a sculpture by the developer’s father.  You can read more in this City News article What is that? Holding hands in a hidden Toronto garden. Thanks to Richard Longley for spotting this!

100 Acts of Kindness in Toronto
Local lawyer and writer Benjamin Miller is working on a project compiling stories of acts of kindness in Toronto:

"There are stories all around us of people doing kind acts for one another. Acts that we witness that we feel set an example for us all to follow. Even with social media, many of these stories are never recorded or shared, though we could all benefit a little if they were. If you have stories to share, please consider filling out this survey so they can be compiled and shared with others and maybe bring more kindness into the world as a result! If you have any questions, please reach out to miller.benjamin@ymail.com."
