Begin Again:

Believing in human potential also requires that we believe in human fallibility. For as long as there have been humans, we have hurt each other, made mistakes, and failed — again and again. But Unitarian Universalism challenges us to think about what happens after we fall short. Repairing relationships requires both accountability and forgiveness. How do we forgive ourselves and each other, and begin again in love?

COVID Protection Policy

The Board appreciates your continued flexibility as we progress through and eventually past this public health emergency.

CUUB will base masking requirements on CDC COVID-19 Community Levels, which are updated Thursday evenings by 8pm Eastern per the CDC website.

CUUB will post a color matched red/yellow/green sign on each main entry door and change as needed before the Sunday service.
  • HIGH (red) - full masking while in the building excepting those who have tested negative that morning or while stating Joys & Sorrows at the podium microphone.
  • MEDIUM (YELLOW) - "restaurant style" allowing additional unmasking in the building only while seated; coffee/snacks (etc.) are allowed to be consumed in the building while seated. Masks are required for singing (excepting "HIGH" precautions above)
  • LOW (Green) masks optional and recommended for attendees with additional health and safety concerns at their own discretion.

CUUB News Board Update 9/9/22

The board met at the end of August and discussed current issues facing our congregation. The theme behind each of these is the need for more volunteers to assist so that we can keep and/or enhance the life of our community. Simplification of services is in progress with the goal to meet the needs of those in person for services, on zoom and also the needs of our tech team. We are committed to keeping the highest level of service possible for our community within our current constraints. In addition, we feel it is important to keep our website current and create an easier method to communicate with members, friends and those in search of a spiritual community. In the last CUUB News a call for tech/IT volunteers resulted in no responses.

Our membership team needs assistance with retention of members but also recruitment. Don Reef held an orientation and we have several attendees interested in becoming members. A book signing will be scheduled in the near future.

We currently have about 25-30% participation by members. In an effort to increase involvement we will be more project oriented. FACES is successful by meeting when there is a project to do; Facilities is successful by asking members to help out with the building without the need for them to attend a meeting.

In addition, members are encouraged to have an idea and bring it to fruition with help as needed. Jim Dowd recently brought back the Sangha meditation and organized a Voters Not Politicians rally at CUUB. Karen Sanderson is interested in starting an Adult SE initiative.

Reminder: Our meetings are now on the 4th Wednesday at 6:30-8 pm. We will meet in person unless Covid level is red. We will have the Zoom open for those who are not able to attend in person. The link is in the CUUB Calendar.

Covid precautions have been carefully thought out and voted on by the board. We have had members of our community get sick even with vaccines and boosters. We will continue these precautions.

Thank you for your continued support,
Jeanette Darbe, President

Sangha Meeting

The CUUB Sangha is grateful to Brenda Lindsay for lending her expertise and guidance in resuming our mindful practice. She was generous with her busy schedule as a leader with Indivisible and now teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), locally and online. Thank you, Brenda. For information on her classes visit her website: www.mindtransformationsllc.com/upcoming-classes

As Grace would have it, one of our new member candidates, Krysten Wall, has volunteered to lead our group going forward. Krysten has been trained in meditation and has been teaching meditation for over twenty years. She will lead a guided meditation at 6 pm in the CUUB sanctuary on the second and fourth Thursday of the month, beginning September 8th. The many benefits of meditation practices and trainings will be explored. Please join us.

Annual Pottery Donation Fundraiser: Saturday, September 24th at the Brighton Farmers Market.

Please let Alicia Zemper (aliciazemper@gmail.com) know if you have any pottery you would like to donate.

CUUB Social Justice Update

Severe Weather Network: This is a volunteer effort to offer shelter to those who find themselves in need.  Greg Soave is looking for CUUB members to help with this very important work in our community. Contact him at (810) 730-6066.
Movie Night: We will be showing “Who We Are - A Chronicle of Racism in America” on October 13, 2022 at 7 pm. Please make every effort to attend and view this important film.
Livingston Diversity Council: We are now partners with them and have a nice plaque by the visitor sign-up sheet in the Gathering Room.
Huron River contamination: MDHHS has been testing the river regularly for hexavalent chromium that was spilled into the river. So far they’ve discovered that the amount of this chemical is far less than expected and have now removed the no-contact order. Update here.
Task Forces: Are you interested in working on a specific SJ issue? We have room for you on our standing task forces: Voter’s Rights, Racial Justice, Economic Inequality, Environment, Preventing Gun Violence, LGBTQ+, and Immigration.
Next meeting: September 20th at 5:30pm. We hold a multi-platform meeting. A Zoom link will be available as the meeting nears. Email socialjustice@cuub.orgto let us know you will be attending.

Your voice is needed!

Sunday, September 18 will be the second Sunday when the Ministry Team asks for your input on updating our congregational covenant as specified by our Bylaws. Who are we? What promises do we make to each other to accomplish our mission? This should be a meaningful exercise moving forward together! Questions? Email ministry@cuub.org. See you Sunday!

CUUB Auction

The FACES team will once again be hosting CUUB’s Big Auction. This year it will be on November 20th after service at noon. We will have items for a silent auction and also wonderful items and offerings for the big auction.
We need everyone to think of an item or talent they could donate to CUUB for the auction. Could you make or bake something, teach a skill, offer an outing or your time that could be auctioned for the benefit of CUUB? Use your imagination! We would love to hear from you. Please contact Skip Getz-Walsh with your ideas. Skip.getz@yahoo.com or call 810-730-2878.
