Hey, y'all! Today's the 60th anniversary of a historic speech President John F. Kennedy gave about space exploration at Rice University. It kicked off the nation's charge toward the moon. Watch the speech here and keep scrolling for how you can celebrate👨‍🚀

What Houston's Talking About

🌩️ Sick of Storms

As climate change worsens, so does the state of Texans’ mental health. Dana Jones, who lives in Houston, says she cries or hyperventilates when it rains after experiencing back-to-back storm damage at her home from Hurricane Harvey, Tropical Storm Imelda, and then Winter Storm Uri. [Houston Public Media]

🚀 Moon Launch

NASA says they’re looking to launch Artemis I up to the moon later this month after some recent failed attempts. The Artemis I blast off could possibly happen on Sept. 23 or 27. [Houston Public Media]

😬 Unfriendly Alligators

Rowers in Oyster Creek out in Sugar Land have seen two separate alligator attacks recently. One example: A five-foot-long alligator struck a rower’s boat, leaving bite marks behind. [Houston Public Media]

How to Register to Vote 🗳️

Election Day is coming up fast on Nov. 8, and early voting starts even sooner on Oct. 24.  You gotta register by Oct. 11 if you want to vote in the upcoming elections. If you’re not registered to vote yet or want to double-check that you are, I got you covered!

How Do I Check?

You can check here on the Texas Secretary of State’s website to see if you’re registered to vote. You’ll need some basic information: date of birth, name and driver's license information. If you have your VUID (Voter Unique Identifier) which can be found on your voter registration, then you can also look yourself up with that.

Am I Eligible To Vote?

First, before you register to vote, you want to make sure of these things:
  • At least 18-years-old
  • A U.S. Citizen
  • A resident of the county you're registered in
  • Not a convicted felon (unless your sentence is complete, including probation and parole)
  • Not declared mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote by a court of law

How Do I Register?

Online: If you prefer to fill out your voter registration application online, you can. Although, you'll still have to mail it to the voter registrar’s office. To start your online application, click here.

In Person: You can also visit any Election Administrator’s Office and submit your completed application form in person. Pick up an application from the U.S. Post Office, library, Texas Department of Public Safety, high school, or other government offices.

Mail: Request a postage-paid application via email from voters@harrisvotes.com, and an application will be mailed to you. Applications can be mailed to: Harris County Elections Administrator's Office P.O. Box 3527 Houston, Texas 77253-3527

Need to Change Address?

As I wrote this, I realized I need to update my address on my voter registration. To do that, you can visit this online form. To complete, you’ll need some key information: current driver's license or id card, social security number, voter registration card VUID number,

Where Is It?

1. Sooo let's say you want to do some shopping? Can you name where I am?

2. Bonus points: If you tell me a fun story, tidbit, or memory you have from this area.

I'll share the winner and other fun tidbits I get tomorrow! All emails should be sent to brooke.lewis@citycast.fm

Today On City Cast Houston

American alligators, the kind that live in the Houston area, came off the endangered species list in the 1990s. But now they're facing a whole new round of threats. Today, host Lisa Gray is joined by City Cast contributor Scott Solomon, biology professor at Rice University, and alligator expert Cord Eversol to explain how you study an alligator and what risks face the alligator population at Brazos Bend Park.
What's up with the gators?
I totally took piano lessons a few times (heavy, on the few) in elementary school because of Alicia Keys. Happy Monday everyone!
