USS Student Newsletter

Dear Students & Community,

As we are preparing to begin a new academic year, we would like to extend a warm welcome to our new and returning students, as well as our allies in this work.

For those who recently joined the Triton family, we would like to introduce Undocumented Student Services to you. Our unit primarily focuses on supporting undocumented students, but we also work with students from mixed-status families and those who are Permanent Residents or U.S. citizens.

For example, if you are a Permanent Resident who wants to become a U.S. citizen, we can help. If you are a U.S. citizen and wonder if you can help your undocumented parents or partners adjust their immigration status, we can help.

For students who identify as undocumented: We are here for you! We understand sharing your immigration status is difficult – some of our team members share or have shared the experience- but we ask you to give us a chance. Our services and programs are created to support you in navigating the complexities you may face due to your immigration status. We invite you to read the list of programs and services we offer on this page. If you are familiar with our services, we still encourage you take a read. You may learn something new!

Without a doubt, you will be faced with questions you may not know the answers to, and that's where we come in. Let's figure things out together! Please make an appointment with our team to talk about your immigration status and let us help you maximize your time at UC San Diego and prepare for what's after.

We leave you with information we want to highlight for students this month. All banners are hyperlinked, so click on them for more information. We look forward to working together and wish you a great start to the school year!

All our best,
USS Team

Legal Updates

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published on August 30, 2022, a final rule codifying as a federal regulation the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy that began in 2012. The final rule will take effect on Monday, October 31, 2022. In general, DACA under this new federal regulation will maintain the same application and renewal process. The eligibility criteria and documentary requirements are the same as those outlined in the memorandum that created DACA in 2012. The benefits of receiving DACA also remain the same. University of California Immigrant Legal Services Center created a FAQ regarding the finalized DACA regulation, we encourage students to review it and email us if they have any further questions.
