September Member Meeting In Person!
Come Hear Plans for 2023

Our next member meeting will be held in person on Tuesday, September 13 starting at 4:00 pm. The location is the Ygnacio Valley Library, 2661 Oak Grove, Walnut Creek, CA 94598

The Board of Directors will have a planning meeting on Sunday, Sept 11 during which they will outline the direction of CAA for the year ahead. They will present all of this information at the meeting on Sept.13.

Call for Volunteers at Holbrook Elementary

Would you be interested in volunteering to demo art lessons for the children at Holbrook Elementary School in Concord? This school currently does not have an art program and parents are interested in starting an art program there. They have asked CAA to help recruit volunteers. Anyone wishing to volunteer must have clearance from MDUSD. If we get enough volunteers, we will begin organizing the program. Please contact CAA at Concordartassociation@yahoo.com and let us know if you are interested.

Teacher’s Grant Program

The Concord Art Association was able to award TWENTY $100.00 Teacher’s Grants for the 2022/2023 school year! We would like to thank our members for all your work this year, to make this possible! The Following teachers received these grants and we are looking forward to seeing what they are able to create in their classrooms. The grants were awarded to Rebecca Campos – Hidden Valley Elementary, Jan Mucha – Ayers Elementary, Kimberly Anderson – Rio Vista Elementary, Jane Smith – Rio Vista Elementary, Vanessa Garcia – Meadow Homes Elementary, Jillian Cary – Stranwood Elementary, Jeong Kinser – Bancroft Elementary, Seena Smith – Pine Hollow Middle School, Kelly Kahl – Pine Hollow Middle School, Jennifer Gaston – Monte Gardens Elementary, Laura Muller – Monte Gardens Elementary, Andrea Ward – Wren Ave Elementary, Angela Ordaz – Holbrook Language Academy, Carol Lutz – Westwood Elementary, Cheryl Monroe – Westwood Elementary, Henar Requejo – Holbrook Language Academy, Alejandra Mayorga – Holbrook Language Academy, Linda Khatami – Cambridge Elementary, Michelle Traynor – Foothill Middle School and Cindy Aguilar – Monte Gardens Elementary. Unfortunately, our budget was limited and we were unable to award grants to all the applicants. We would like to thank all the teachers who applied and are keeping the arts alive in their classrooms. If anyone is interested in donating to this specific program for next year, you can send your check to Concord Art Association, P.O. Box 641 Concord, CA 94522. Please include the Teacher’s Grant Program on your memo line.

CONCORD UTILITY BOX PROJECT

CAA is searching for more art! The City of Concord has expanded the 2022 project to 14 traffic control boxes and we need more submissions! Designs need to be big and bold as these boxes are located on major roads in Concord. The theme for this phase is very broad...Concord Reflections! Your design can be representational or abstract but it must be colorful and beautiful!

The supply chain issue that has repeatedly delayed this project has been resolved. The city is expecting that winning artists can begin painting in October. All painting will be done at a special central location...the Civic Center in Concord. The city will supply tents, tables, and chairs for artists. In a big change from past projects, for this phase artists will be able to paint 7 days a week! We hope you will consider participating. CAA Spells Fun at National Night Out

CAA members turned out at the Concord Public Library to celebrate the 2022 National Night Out on Tuesday, August 2nd. John Nakanishi, Pat Calabro, Pat McDermont, Renaye Johnson, and Samineh Perryman staffed an art booth for kids. Coloring pages, bookmarks, i-pads for digital art experimentation, and a “The World is in Safe Hands” poster to create and color were all available at the CAA booth.

National Night Out began in 1970 in Pennsylvania and became a nationwide tradition in 1984. The annual campaign is intended to build relationships between police and the community. The Concord event at the library was hosted by the Concord Police Department.

DVC Library Joint Show:
CAA, Studio55 and Global Art Project (GAP)

There is something new at Diablo Valley College this year! For the first time, DVC is holding a joint art exhibit in the DVC library with three prominent art organizations – The Concord Art Association (CAA), Global Art Project (GAP) and Studio 55. This show is worth a view. The hours for the library, which is open to the public, are Monday through Thursday from 6am to 9pm. The show runs the entire Fall Semester which is August 22nd to December 10th. A reception will be held on September 17th. The library is located at 321 Golf Club Road in Pleasant Hill.

Most of you know CAA, but you may not be as familiar with the other groups sharing the show.

Studio 55, a local art studio located at 55 Howe Street in Martinez is a fine arts studio for individual and group artwork. The studio holds workshops and classes throughout the week. There are artist studio spaces and studio time available, as well as arrangements for artists to run their own workshops and classes. Jill Landau, founder of Studio 55 is an award-winning artist and owner of Build-tek Inc. Jill was also a founding member of the Lafayette Gallery and shows her artwork year-round throughout the greater bay area. To learn more about Studio 55, visit studio55martinez.com.

Global Art Project is a membership based international collaborative of Mixed-media Artists whose active participants vary between 6-20 depending on the project. Having roots initially in web based activity beginning in 2012 (post card and correspondence art projects such as KNEE(jerk) Fragmentation Project.

GAP has generated numerous workshops, exhibitions and collaborative studio experiences in Venice, Lecce and Treviso Italy, Mazatlan, Mexico, San Francisco, Mill Valley, Benicia, Sausalito, and Novato. To learn more about GAP, visit globartproject.wixsite.com/globalartproject-art.

September Plein Air with Nancy Roberts

Here comes September with it’s many national observances/awareness events including Labor Day (last day to wear white), Grandparent’s Day (Woo-Hoo) and Patriot’s Day, (held in honor and remembrance of those who died in the September 11 attacks of 2001), just to name a few!

As we enjoy the extended summer sunshine/heat, mid-September will be signaling the start of fall and hopefully, cooler days ahead. While we still have these lovely days, let’s join other artists for another Plein Air adventure to paint/ photograph /sketch the spectacular Mt. Diablo view from the open space across the street from Northgate High School! Join us on Sunday, September 11^th, 10am -2pm. For more information, click here for Nancy’s flyer! See you there!
