77th Session of the UN General Assembly

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making body of the United Nations (UN), composed of representatives from each of the 193 UN Member States. It serves as a platform for discussion of specific issues that lead to voting on and adoption of resolutions.

Every year, the UNGA meets in regular sessions, which run from September to December. This year marks the 77th session of the UNGA (UNGA77). It will officially open on Tuesday, 13 September, and the first day of the high-level General Debate will begin on Tuesday, 20 September. The General Debate provides a space for Member States to deliver statements and raise any topic of importance in front of a world audience.

UNGA77 will present an opportunity for world leaders to come together to discuss how we can collectively create a more sustainable and just future for all.

Call to Action

“Make sure you hold your governments, your elected leaders accountable...Make sure you vote. Make sure that you get your priorities heard by those who have the power to make decisions and make sure that you are actively participating in civic and political life in your countries...create this change yourself...Don’t wait for the UN or don’t wait for your governments to deliver on these solutions...It is our future. We have to take matters into our own hands.”

Jayathma Wickramanayake, Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, UNGA76
