On display now until the end of October - an exhibition depicting scenes from the history of the west end, using pottery models created by more than 200 people of all ages. The main exhibition is in Newcastle City Library on Floor 6. A smaller display can be seen in the cafe of the Discovery Museum. The exhibition covers topics such as industry, the Romans, grand houses and wartime. Meet local characters such as Jack Palmer, - a former miner from Benwell who became a world-class boxer - and Walter Scott, an Elswick resident and one of Britain's first self-made millionaires.
This exhibition was organised by the St James Heritage and Environment Group with help from local schools, church
and faith groups and other groups in the locality.
Free talk at Discovery Museum - Friday 30th September 2 pm
To accompany the Potted History exhibition, Rosie Serdiville will give a talk about the unique photographic albums in the Tyne and Wear Archives chronicling events during the period in the early 20th century when west end councillors John and Violet Grantham held the posts of Lord Mayor of Newcastle. The most significant event was the major disaster at the
Montagu Pit in Scotswood that killed 38 men and boys.
This is featured in the Potted History display at the museum.
Shipley Art Gallery
The Shipley Art Gallery will be hosting three creative workshops for adults in September and October. For each workshop, you will get a chance to work with two artists learning about two art techniques over one day, including textiles, paper cutting, calligraphy and printmaking.
You can book the workshops via the below link.
Digital Voice has a huge collection of short films made by older people about life back in the day, to stimulate memories of childhood. In this session, they share some tips on how to help a group or individual to reminisce and free video resources to help stimulate the conversation around distant memories. Digital Voice will showcase clips from community heritage stories, as well as tips on finding images and music that take the people you work with back to their
youth and share happy memories.
This is from Voice asking for people aged 55+ to sit for a photograph and speak to a researcher. They are aiming to show older people are not the stereotypical ones we see in much social media and on TV etc.

If you live in the Fenham or Wingrove area you will be aware of Fenham Pocket Park
which is next door to Fenham Library and the former swimming baths.
This community of interest group really wants to reach into the wider community to support the idea of a “meadow” being created as a raised bed area at wheelchair-accessible height to complement the ramp from the library, along with some dwarf fruit trees. They also have ideas such as a herb garden to be used by the Men’s Pie Club and other users of the library.
They hope to develop community cohesion, improve our carbon footprint with trees, and biodiversification, and offer new services to local residents.
Why not join this community, spread the word and get involved?
