FROM YOUR HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Parents and Carers

We started this week by considering as a community what we can learn from The Queen as we reflect on her 70 year reign. I also asked students and staff for ideas about how we could commemorate her death and this time of mourning for our nation and the Commonwealth. I reviewed all of the suggestions with the Senior Leadership Team, and we particularly liked the idea of us dedicating our new library to Her Majesty’s memory, and of having a memorial bench which will go outside Reception for everyone to enjoy.

We also loved the suggestion of a creative writing competition which you will see below as our first House competition of the year. Many students have also taken the chance to sign the online book of condolences at
royal.uk. You will no doubt have seen the news of school closures on Monday 19th September to allow us all to pay our respects to The Queen on the day of her funeral.

We have had a busy week as always, and my team and I have been particularly impressed by the quality of work in (almost all!) students’ books. This is a big focus for us this year, so please do encourage your child to show you their work too, so that we can share in encouraging a drive on the highest quality classwork and homework.  Thanks to all who attended the Information Evenings this week; we hope you had the opportunity to ask all the questions you might have. It has also been a busy week for those students in Year 10 who have completed their catch-up Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition after it had to be cancelled last year due to rail strikes. We firmly believe in the enriching power of the outdoors and hope that you will have an opportunity to get outside over the long weekend as we reflect on Her Majesty’s lifetime of service.

With very best wishes

Ms C Venter
Head of School

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards

The day draws to a close on another DofE expedition.  This time neither a train strike or heatwave could stop Y10 from completing their Bronze DofE award.  A few months overdue and a little bit damp from the rain but big smiles and a sense of achievement see us on our way home.

Surbiton High School University and Careers Fair this Saturday

SHS are hosting 30 universities and 23 career consultants from a range of professions as part of their annual University and Careers Fair at Surbiton Crescent, KT1 2JT.  It starts at 09:30am and finishes at 12:30pm and is aimed at Yrs 10, 11, 12 and 13.
Homework Timetable

Please see below this year's homework schedule.  All homework will be set in Edulink so that pupils and parents are able to see the details and deadlines set by teachers. We also continue to expect all pupils to read for at least 20 minutes each day. To support pupils with homework, we are introducing a KS3 homework club which will take place every day between 3pm and 4pm in S1-1. Pupils are able to come and work independently or will be able to request support from KS5 prefects and staff. KS4 pupils can use the breakout spaces around school to work independently up to 5pm each day.
PE & Sport Roundup (from last week)
(not published last week in respect of the announcement of
Queen Elizabeth's passing)

I hope you are well and all had a restful and exciting summer. There is no other place I can start than to mention the amazing victory of the Lionesses in the summer. The England Women’s Team were outstanding in winning the European Championships. I was lucky enough to be at Wembley to witness history unfold in front of my eyes and it was even more special to see members of the TKA community at Wembley (Elizabeth K, Katya VDL and Evie H). The Lionesses victory came shortly after our U13 Girls London Cup victory - a special moment in the last academic year.

I would like to congratulate all A Level and GCSE PE students on their success in this year's exam. We are all super proud of you and wish you all the best for your future endeavours.

We welcome our new GCSE, CNAT and A Level students and look forward to seeing them grow and achieve over the next two years.

A massive well done to Tom B in Y8 for his outstanding summer achievements in his National Lead Climbing Championships..

PE & Sport Roundup (this week)

Welcome to this week's PE & Sport Roundup. The PE department has come alive in full earnest this week with all extra-curricular clubs up and running. We have had 27 PE clubs running this week that have seen hundreds of our students train hard whilst enjoying themselves along with their fellows peers. All of our extra-curricular activities are open to all students, so if you have not signed up for a club yet - please do get yourself along next week. Here is the Extracurricular timetable again for reference PE Enrichment TT

Furthermore this week has seen our newly appointed PE Assistants begin their roles with supporting the PE department in delivering the extra curricular clubs. We have over 20 PE Assistants helping to support their TKA community. The PE Assistants will be developing their; leadership, communication, organisation and creativity skills whilst supporting their fellow peers.

Well done to Gabriel in Y7 who competed in Portugal at the start of term in the Liga Pro Skate Almada – Pro Series Street Internacional Open and came out on top winning the category.

Looking ahead to next week we have our Open Evening on Wednesday night. Thank you to all the PE students who have signed up to help out that evening - it certainly is very special to have our talented PE students showcase our department and talk to prospective parents and students about their experiences.

Next Friday sees our U14 girls football team (formally the U13s) compete in their ESFA National Cup 1st round fixture and by the virtues of sport they have been drawn against the team they defeated in the London Cup Final. Mr Arun has the girls prepared for what no doubt will be a very tough fixture as Kingsdale look for revenge, however we know how great our girls are.

Furthermore the Y10 boys team kick off their ESFA National Cup campaign away at Rutlish school. Mr Lockett is in a confident mood after some excellent early practice sessions with the team.

Good luck to all teams next week in their fixtures.

Liga Pro Skate - Pro Series Street Internacional Open

Well done to Gabriel in Y7 who competed in Portugal at the start of term in the Liga Pro Skate Almada – Pro Series Street Internacional Open and came out on top, winning the category. Gabriel has shown huge commitment to his studies whilst being away at the competition and we are excited to see his tricks and talent progress over the course of the year! Well done Gabriel and good luck in your upcoming competitions.

GCSEPod
All pupils in Years 10 and 11 have access to an amazing resource called GCSEPod which breaks down their GCSE courses into short videos that they can access on any internet-enabled device. The videos use lots of key language that students need for their exams and are a great support throughout the course. We encourage all students to engage with GCSEPod.

To help maximise home learning using GCSEPod, they have created this 4-minute video for parents/carers and are hosting a free webinar on 6th October - further details and registration are here

If your child is having difficulty accessing this fantastic resource, please contact Mr Holmes.

Young Carers

Is your child a Young Carer for someone at home? Perhaps they help look after someone at home with:

  • A sensory impairment

  • A long-term illness

  • A physical or learning disability

  • A drug or alcohol problem

  • Mental ill health

If you think that this applies to your child, and you haven’t done so already, please complete this Google Form. We have around 40 Young Carers who are known to us, however we also know that that number will be much higher.

We work closely with Kingston Young Carers Project who come in once a month for lunch with our Young Carers. Kingston YCP is a fantastic organisation that has a weekly youth club and provides excursions and activities to the Young Carers that they support. If your child is a Young Carer and you haven’t signed up yet, do consider registering with KYCP.

In school we run a weekly Young Carers Club after school on Tuesdays in Pupil Support.

If you would like any further information please contact Mr Holmes or Ms Jacques.

Talking to your child about online sexual harrassment:
A Guide for Parents

The Children's Commissioner, Dame Rachel de Souza DBE, has recently published a guidance document for parents/carers helping to support them to understand online sexual harassment.

The commissioner's team brought together a group of 16 - 21 year olds and asked them talk about what they think parents should know, and what they should say to their children when talking about sexualised bullying and the pressures of growing up online.

The report and poster 'The things I wish my parents had known…' can be downloaded here.
