CELEBRATIONS AND THANK YOUS

  • Well done to Bree, Mel and Donna for a fantastic assembly hosted by Rooms 4 and 45 - solid messages!
  • Thank you to the RAP committee for a fabulous NAIDOC Week. It was great to see our students and staff embrace the spirit of Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up.
  • Alesandra for the Great Rock Hide (not that there are any rocks left 😆 few koolbardi's around I'd say!)
  •  Emily for shouldering the Great Book Swap fundraiser. She worked tirelessly advertising the event, sorting books, counting the money AND spending a heap- over $1000 on books to support Indigenous authors.
  • Paulina for her work with Wesley Dance mob and Alton Walley - you were flexible with timetabling, your work with continuous phone conversations and follow up was amazing. Plus arranging and facilitating the Science Room each day for the incursion (including coming back late at night to put chairs away).
  • Lee for her outstanding work with our socials. You showed our community the amount of work MHPS does.
  • Jaiyden for your tireless help with EVERYTHING from Newsletters, memos, socials, IT support and all the other things that come with the beast that is MHPS.
  • Mel for knocking up the class overviews in a short space of time.
  • Katie and the amazing music team who assisted with some difficult songs - the students sound beautiful!
  • Thank you to Anne and the Year 6 team for working with our parent helpers to provide an amazing Italian dinner at Sienna’s on Thursday night. Cibo delizioso!
  • Thank you to Lorena for acting as principal whilst Leon was away with the PSR team last week
  • Thank you to Katie Hardman for taking our concert band (Friday night) and orchestra (Sunday) to the Bands Festival over the weekend. The kids absolutely loved it and your dedication to them is amazing!
  • Thank you to all the crew who dedicated their Saturday to attending Day 2 of the Science of Reading PL at ECU. You’re all amazing!
  • Thank you Katelyn for all of your preparation for the excursion on Friday. I am sure the students will have a fantastic time.

PRINCIPALS PEN

As you all know, the strategic direction statement that will feature in our new Business Plan focuses on both the distinctive breadth of student opportunities we offer as well as the goal of enhancing student outcomes through whole school, evidence-based teaching practices.

Regarding the former, didn’t last week shine a light on the range of wonderful opportunities that exist at our school! On Thursday we had our Italian student dinner, where over 100 Year 6 students, their 5 classroom teachers, Signora Monisse and our amazing parent helpers descended on Sienna’s for a wonderful night. The following day we had 800 students attend our NAIDOC closing ceremony to cap off a fantastic week of celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. I am convinced that our school does this better than any other high ICSEA school: genuinely, meaningfully and respectfully. Wasn’t it wonderful to see our Aboriginal students speak and perform in front of such a big crowd. Then later that night I joined Mrs Hardman at Churchlands Concert Hall to see the Mount Hawthorn Area Concert Band perform to a packed house and rapturous applause. The smiles on the kids’ faces as they exited the stage said it all.

Regarding the latter, I have loved seeing so many of our teachers stretch themselves by dabbling with some different elements of practice. Hearing conversations about things like Let’s Decode, cognitive load, the science of reading, engagement strategies, daily reviews and assessment schedules shows just how dedicated our teachers are to improving their practice to impact outcomes for our most important people: our students. I encourage you to have a play, share with each other and ask questions during the rest of this year. Remember that the cognitive dissonance that accompanies change is a completely natural reaction. Remember too that we’re on this journey because holding high expectations of success for every student and creating the conditions for high quality teaching in every classroom helps us achieve what the Public School Accountability team recommended when they visited last year: that we should aim to meet and exceed the performance of schools with similar postcodes.

On that note, whilst Year 3 and 5 individual NAPLAN results have been released to parents, the Department hasn't yet released the school level comparative data. If this occurs prior to the first day of Term 4 we will check it out together on our School Development Day.

Have a great week, everyone!

COMPASS CORNER

Thank you for all of your practice marking the roll and trialling different  features over the last few weeks. We have 2 weeks left to sandpit before we go live on the first school day of Term 4.

Tasks for this week;

  1. Login into Compass using your E Number and DOE password on the app or via a web browser eg Chrome on https://mounthawthornps-wa.compass.education

  2. Practice marking the roll at least once a week. You will need to mark the roll in Integris and Compass during the sandpit period. In term 4 you will only mark the roll in Compass.

  3. Try Adding an Attendance Note from the Roll

1. Hover over a student’s name to see the pop-up with the student’s details.

2. Click the ‘Add’ button and select ‘Note/Approval’.

3. Select the reason for the note/approval and click ‘Save’.

You can change the date of the note/approval to provide a note for a previous/future date by selecting the start and dates or times for part days.

  1. If you haven’t already - Open up a Class Handbook which will be very useful if you are going on an excursion or offsite. On you class page under the section on the right click on and then open the class handbook. This handbook gives you a class list and all the medical information you require.

Just a reminder for online PL options to help you navigate and trial the features of Compass.

If you would like some online PL on various aspects of Compass there are short videos available on the  Compass Academy. You will need to sign up initially and enrol in a course that suits your needs. Teacher Fundamentals is a good start and you can watch videos at your own pace on relevant topics.

Alternatively, when logged in to Compass, press at the top and then cid:image005.png@01D8B93A.C137F020. This contains useful .pdfs of how to do things within Compass.

Catch me or email if you have any questions.

LOST PROPERTY

This has lapsed and needs a revamp and some real work put in over the next couple of weeks to address.  Skye Bairstow (Parent) has offered to work with me and even developed a plan. We will commence on Monday but would be great if you can have a read through the plan and discuss with your students.  I’ll also do some work with the School Resources student leaders on spreading the word.  On Tuesday we will have all the lost property laid out in the Undercover area for students to come and look at and see if they can find any of their own items

Thank you - Perisse

ICT DEVICE PREFERENCE FORM

Leon, Jen and myself are wanting more information about how devices are used within the classroom and get feedback on devices you hope to get. We are looking to assess our options in the device space. If you could please fill out the web form below, it would be greatly appreciated.

SCHOOL PUBLICATION PHOTOS

Over the next couple of weeks, I may be coming around to classrooms taking photos with a camera for our Annual Report / Business Plan etc. If you have anything photo worthy coming up in your class over the coming weeks, or you think your classroom is particularly photogenic, please let me know details via email Jaiyden.Toquero@education.wa.edu.au. If I come at a bad time for your class, feel free to turn me away - I won't take it personally. Please also be aware of what students have photo permissions in your class.

We are particularly interested in the following spaces:

  • Music

  • Sport

  • Art

  • Technology

  • Playground / Activities

  • Library

  • Student collaboration / One-on-one teaching

Thank you - Jaiyden

CHAIRS IN SENIOR COMPUTER LAB

Could you please ensure that if you remove any chairs from the computer lab for any reason you ensure that they are returned to the same place. We seem to be having a lot of chairs disappearing!

Thanks - Cailie
